The Best Team Won
Shildon AFC travelled to F.A. Vase semi-finalists South Shields on Saturday 25th February 2017 in a vital six pointer league game, knowing defeat today would mean their chances of retaining the league title will just about disappear.
Before the start, in front of a crowd of 1130, there was a minute silence for well liked and respected Shildon kit man Neil Edgeley who passed away on Wednesday 22nd February. Shildon players all wore black armbands. Neil will be sadly missed.
Shildon knew they would have to be a their very best to get a result today as Shields had won their last 21 games in all the league and cup competitions. They have only lost twice in the league.
Early chances fell to Lewis Wing and Billy Greulich-Smith for Shildon and Michael Richardson and Wayne Phillips for Shields before the home side scored on the half hour. A left wing cross was cleverly fired through a crowd of players by Gavin Cogen.
Half Time: South Shields 1 Shildon AFC 0
The goal spurred Shields on and they were more threatening in the 2nd half and should have increased their lead on 57 minutes when Shildon’s Stephen Capper gave the ball away to David Foley but he shot just wide of the post.
For Shildon a great free kick from Lewis Wing hit the post with the keeper stranded.
At the other end Gavin Cogden was through but lobed the ball over the bar.
With Shildon pressing for the equaliser, the home side broke away and Carl Finnigan scored Shields second goal on the 90th minute.
Final Score: South Shields 2 Shildon AFC 0
Bookings: None
Man-of-the-Match: Danny Parker
