Shildon 1-1 Whitley Bay

Ten-man Shildon returned to the top of the league tonight after a hard fought draw at Dean Street against Whitley Bay.

New signing, Craig Ruddy was in the starting line up while Lee Kerr, who also signed yesterday from league rivals, Spennymoor Town, started the match on the bench.

Shildon took the lead in the eighth minute with a wonder goal from Ben Wood, who unleashed an unstoppable shot from 25 yards.

But the match turned when referee, Paul Newhouse adjudged that Jamie Harwood’s brush against Alex Kempster was worthy of a penalty – a decision the Shildon defender felt was harsh.

However, having awarded the spot kick, the official was left with no option but to issue a red card to the last defender and force the Railway to survive the remainder of the match one player short of their opponents.

Paul Chow confidently dispatched the penalty past Keith Finch, who continues to stand in for the injured Lewis Graham.

Shildon did survive. Indeed, at no time did they come under particularly heavy pressure, bar a frenetic final few moments, as the well-earned point loomed large.

Lee Kerr made his debut, replacing Ben Wood in the second half, but the prolific scorer was unable to make an impact with the Railwaymen wisely unwilling to commit recklessly forward.

In the end, the point ensured the Railwaymen returned to the top of the division.

Next up for Shildon is Ashington, who visit on Friday night for the Railwaymen’s sixth league match in a row at Dean Street. A win will almost certainly secure top spot for another weekend.

Shildon sign Ruddy and Kerr

Shildon AFC has announced the signings of both Craig Ruddy and Lee Kerr from Spennymoor Town.

‘We are really excited to have managed to bring both these players on board,” said Shildon Manager, Gary Forrest.

“Craig Ruddy has been a great servant to Spennymoor Football Club and we hope he can deliver similar performances at Shildon.

“It is a case of third time lucky with Craig who, in my opinion, is one of the most exciting attacking players in the league.

“The thought of Lee Kerr actually signing for Shildon is amazing,” added Forrest. “Lee has probably been the league’s most talented player over the last 10 years and he is still only 26.

“It was only a few years ago that the level of his performances attracted serious attention from Newcastle.” he added.

Both players go in to the squad for tomorrow night’s fixture at home to Whitley Bay.

SHILDON v Spraire Lads

Due to FA rules, we are unable to provide details of the result.

Shildon played host to Darlington Spraire Lads, with both sides creating numerous chances.  Their all-round play is showing the good coaching they are receiving.  Jack Leighton was given the man of the match award, however it should be said that there were excellent performances by all the team.

SHILDON v Primrose Hill

Due to FA rules, we are unable to provide details of the result.

Shildon had their regular goalkeeper missing through illness, but Kian Dixon stepped in to produce a good performance.  The team battled well against a larger and more experienced squad, and played some good passing football.  This team is beginning to show what they are capable of and against larger and more experienced teams have coped manfully with the task and have for  long periods been the better team. The corner is turning. Well done lads and lasses.

Shildon still await their first win after a disappointing defeat at home to Mount Pleasant Rangers.

The team were under pressure from the start with a goal from the visitors within the first 5 minutes.  Shildon produced some good chances but were unlucky and failed to score before halftime, with a further 3 from the away side.

A good team talk at the break saw the boys come back with great spirit and their hard work paid off with a goal from Callum Brown.  Mount Pleasant were quick to respond and scored straight from the rebound.  More goals followed but Shildon still piled the pressure on and saw more opportunity with a great corner by Will Dixon, but great defending from the away side kept the ball from the back of the net.  Callum Griffiths got Shildon’s second and final goal from a corner, with the whistle blown just after.

The under 11’s were praised for their performance from the visiting side who said the boys played with heart and determination until the final whistle.

Man of the match – Tom Andelin

The Under 13’s played host to Great Ayton, and produced arguably their best display as a team in 15 months.  After the previous week’s victory, the team started well again, with a couple of good attacks.  However, it was Great Ayton who produced the first effort, with Niall Higham pushing a great effort around the post.  This spurred on the home team, with Adam Campbell racing onto a through ball to calmly slot it just inside the left hand post on 10 minutes.  Almost immediately from the restart, Noah McCourt, making his debut, broke through, rounded the keeper and doubled the advantage.  Ten mins later, a ball over the top saw Tom Andelin clear, and he made no mistake with a calm finish.  The team were now playing some great football, and within a few minutes, McCourt (post) and Campbell (bar) had rattled the woodwork.  On 30 minutes, Ben Oliver got the 4th with a fine finish, and just before the break, Alex Lamb made it 5 with an excellent goal.  Lamb then had time to hit the bar before the half time whistle.  Into the second half, Alex Lamb got his second of the match with another excellent finish, before McCourt got his second on 60 minutes to make it 7.  Adam Campbell rounded off the scoring direct from a corner.

A great team display with the defence really solid, the midfield working hard and a genuine outlet up front.  Tom Andelin picked up the MOTM award, however, there were many candidates.

U10’s big day out

Our under 10’s had the match day experience at Shildon’s home game to Durham City.  They had the opportunity to go behind the scenes before the match and meet the senior players in the dressing room.  They then walked out with the players prior to the match, and had their photos taken with the captains and match officials
