ENL 1 – Ashington Result

Second Home Defeat Within 4 days

Up to the end of February 2015, Shildon AFC had only lost one league game at home all season, but March has been a bad month for the Railwaymen so far, losing twice within 4 days. First, it was 1 – 0 against Consett on Saturday 7th March, then on Wednesday 11th March they went down 4 – 3 to much improved Ashington.

Shildon got off to a dreadful start conceding a goal in the first 3 minutes when Lee Chapman lost the ball to Dylan Williamson who crossed to No 10 Glen Taylor who fired into the roof of the net.

On 16 minutes Ashinton’s Kyle Downey outpaced Jamie Harwood into the area before he was brought down by Harwood for a clear penalty, but to the amazement of everyone in the crowd the referee waived play on.

Shildon levelled on 24 minutes when Micky Rae found Ben Wood whose right foot shot found the net.

Four minutes later Ashington were in front again with a very similar move as the 1st goal with Glen Taylor firing home.

Half Time:  Shildon AFC  1  Ashington  2

Two minutes into the 2nd half a through ball from Jamie Harwood found Mark Doninger who made it 2 – 2.

Ashington were the better side and just after the hour they went ahead for the 3rd time when Andrew Johnson’s long ball fell to the feet of star man Glen Taylor who beat Bobby Moore and fired into the roof of the net for his hat trick.

Minutes later Shildon’s defence was torn apart when a class five man move was finished off by No 8 Tony Stephenson for 4 – 2 to the visitors.

Shildon pulled a goal back on 76 minutes when Mark Hudson found Paul Connor who fired into the bottom corner for 4 – 3.

Shildon pressed for the equaliser but were unable to get another shot on target.

Final Score:  Shildon AFC  3  Ashington  4

ENL1 – Consett Result

Shildon League Challenge Set back

Shildon AFC challenge for the league title took a set back at home on Saturday 7th March 2015 when they were surprising beaten 1- 0 by Consett, who are now managed  by Colin Myers, who took control last month from Kenny Lindoe, both ex Shildon managers.

In blustery conditions, Consett kicked with the wind and early on No 9 Jack Walker beat three Shildon defenders but fired wide.

On 23 minutes a great shot from Matthew Slocombe produced an equally great one handed save from Shildon’s keeper Kyle Hayes.

For Shildon Billy Greulich-Smith headed over and Ben Wood fired straight at the keeper.

Before the break, on 38 minutes Shildon’s Darren Richardson was carried off the field with a bad leg injury.

Half Time:  Shildon AFC  0  Consett  0

The best chance of the game so far fell to Consett’s Michael Mackay on 51 minutes when he was through but somehow missed the goal.

Minutes later Consett’s keeper Chris Elliott dropped the ball from a corner for Billy Greulich-Smith’s shot to be cleared off the line by a defender.

Shildon were on top with Jamie Harwood firing over the bar from 6 yards and Bobby Moore only 5 yards out trying to place the ball instead off blasting it in.

On 67 minutes Adam Rundle crossed to Ben Wood whose header hit the post and the rebound was put away by Paul Connor, but he was judged to be off side.

With 6 minutes remaining Consett score the only goal of the game when a right wing corner was palmed out by Shildon’s keeper Kyle Hayes to No 11 Joshua Gray who cracked the ball into the right corner of the net.

Final Score:  Shildon AFC  0  Consett  1

Goalscorer:  Gray 84

Subs:  Chapman for Richardson 38, Rundle for Ellison 65, Rae for Connor 70.

Bookings:  (Y)  Wood

Shildon gave the ball away far too easily throughout the game today and were not at their best. The manager said it was a tired team performance. In the end things didn’t work out too badly on the day as all the other possible title contenders dropped points. The league is still wide open with possibly 6 teams still capable of winning the championship. Shildon still have 12 games to play. On Wednesday 11th March they are at home to Ashington and then on Saturday 14th March local rivals Bishop Auckland are at Dean Street.
