Match Report

Shildon AFC were surprisingly knocked out of the F.A. Cup in the Preliminary Round at Dean Street on Saturday 31st August 2013 by Penrith, going down 2 – 0.

The final score was a surprise as the Railwaymen dictated the game from the kick off and should have been out of sight within the first 20 minutes.

A Jamie Harwood header went just wide, and then he had a shot cleared off the line. Mark Hudson and Billy Greulich-Smith both missed two good opportunities and then Sam Garvie should have scored.

Although it was one way traffic, Penrith took the lead on 44 minutes, with their first attack of the game, when  star man No 8 Matthew Reid  fired low into the bottom corner.

A minutes later Shildon were shell shocked when Penrith scored again, when a corner from Curtis Wood was headed in by the unmarked Steven Rigg.

Half Time:  Shildon AFC  0  Penrith  2

After harsh words at half time from manager Gary Forrest it was expected Shildon would come out fighting in the 2nd half, but alas, they looked dejected and sorry for themselves and were not able to get a single shot on target during the whole of the half.

With Penrith defending solidly in numbers  they were never troubled, and with 10 minutes remaining they could easily have been three goals up, but sub Michael Reed’s shot hit the post.

Final Score:  Shildon AFC  0  Penrith  2

Bookings:  (Y) Craddock 68

Subs:  Richmond for Wood 75

Man-of-the-Match:  John Brackstone

Shildon should have won this game, but if you don’t put your chances away you will not win any game.
