Shildon AFC Bow out of the Vase
Shildon’s chance of major silverware in the F.A. Vase came to an end on Wednesday 17th December 2014 when they were well beaten 3 – 2 in the 3rd Round by Shaw Lane Aquaforce at Barnsley’s Oakwell ground.
The Railwaymen got off to a perfect start taking the lead after just 90 seconds when Ben Wood headed home. They nearly went 2 – 0 up with a good shot from Billy Greulich-Smith but keeper Ben Gathercole punched the ball away.
Shaw Lane levelled on 25 minutes when a corner was headed in by the unmarked Steff Holt.
Shildon then had a good goal disallowed for off side when Darren Richardson put the ball through the keepers legs.
Right on half time Shildon went behind when a corner ball was cleared to Steff Holt who fired in from the edge of the box for his 2nd goal of the night.
Half Time: Shaw Lane Aquaforce 2 Shildon AFC 1
In the 2nd half Shaw Lane took control outplaying the Railwaymen, and their superiority paid off on 65 minutes when a free kick from 20 yards out by Shane Kelsey took a deflection past keeper Kyle Hayes.
Afterwards, the Northern Counties East League side hardly allowed Shildon any chances until the 89 minutes when a long through pass found Micky Rae who floated the ball over the advancing keeper for Shildon’s 2nd goal. Too little too late.
