Shildon Dumped out of the Durham Challenge Cup
Shildon AFC were dumped out of the Durham Challenge Cup losing 3 – 0 at Washington on Tuesday 26th January 2016.
A hat trick by centre forward John Butler gave the home side a comfortable win.
It is the second time this season that Shildon have been comprehensively beaten by the promoted side, have lost 4 – 2 at the Nissan ground in the league in September.
Washington, playing into a strong wind opening the scoring on 14 minutes with their first attack of the game – a free kick which caused defensive chaos in the Shildon box.
Kicking with a strong wind in the 1st half Shildon struggled to make any clear cut chances. In fact they never had a shot on target. In the 2nd half they were equally as bad, with their only real effort coming with just one minute remaining when Sam Hodgson’s shot hit the bar. Too little, too late.
If truth be told, it would be generous to suggest that Shildon were as much as a shadow of the side that has won the coveted trophy for the past two years. At no point in this game did they display the level of urgency or energy required to progress and were deservedly well beaten.
The Railwaymen have a chance to avenge the heavy defeats when the two sides meet each other at Dean Street this Saturday 30th January in a vital league match. Three points in the title race will go some way to softening the disappointment of this cup exit.
Final Score: Washington 3 Shildon AFC 0
Subs: Dodds for Davis 53, Rae for Wood 60, Doninger for Wing 67
Bookings: None
Man-of-the-Match: There wasn’t one. The whole team underperformed.
