Shildon AFC started their defence of their league title on Wednesday 10th August 2016 with a convincing 6 – 0 home win against newly promoted Chester-le-Street.

The Railwaymen looked threatening from the kick off took an early lead when David Ferguson headed to Micky Rae who side footed in.

Ten minutes later it was 2 – 0 when David Ferguson went on a great run beating two defenders and fired into the bottom corner.

On the half hour David Ferguson was pushed over in the box by Dan Hepplewhite for a penalty which Ant Bell converted, sending the keeper the wrong way.

More goals followed in the 2nd half for Shildon, but just after the hour Craig Mickle for the visitors missed a glorious chance to pull a goal back.

On 65 minutes Billy Greulich-Smith headed onto the bar then knocked the rebound home for 4 – 0 .

Minutes later Mattie Robson ran brilliantly down the left and crossed to the head of Paul Connor for 5 – 0.

Near the end Billy Greulich-Smith found David Ferguson who made no mistake for 6 – 0.
