A Pleasing Team Performance
After the surprise resignation of the management team of Gary Forrest, Stuart Niven, Phil Brumwell and Keith Finch, club captain Daniel ‘Bobby’ Moore stepped up and became manager on Friday 20th January. His first game in charge was away the next day to Sunderland RCA on Saturday 21st January 2017. And what a cracking game it turned out to be with Shildon’s Lewis Wing scoring probably the fastest goal of the season after just 20 seconds.
RCA’s super sub. James Cassidy levelled after 21 minutes but just 3 minutes later man-of-the-match Lewis Wing beat five defenders and found Billy Greulich-Smith, whose pile driver gave keeper Jonathan Carmichael no chance.
It was level pegging on 35 minutes when Michael Charlton scored from a narrow angle. Shildon’s defence were wide open as John Butler ran through and he rounded keeper Peter Jeffries for 3 – 2 to the home side at the break.
Half Time: Sunderland RCA 3 Shildon AFC 2
Shildon stepped up the pace late in the second half scoring four goals in the last 11 minutes. A Lewis Wing corner was headed by Billy Greulich-Smith and deflected in by a defender on 79 minutes, before No 3 Adam McGuinness brought down Anth Bell in the box for a penalty which Bell himself converted with ease. With 3 minutes remaining Micky Rae ran through for number five and in time added on keeper Carmichael was pressed by Micky Rae, losing the ball, and Lewis Wing converted from close range.
Final Score: Sunderland RCA 3 Shildon AFC 6
Goalscorers: wing 1, 90+, Greulich-Smith 21, Bell 83, Rae 87.
Subs: Rae for Purewal 52.
Bookings: (Y) Wing 76, Bell 85.
Man-of-the-Match: Lewis Wing.
After all the turmoil of the last couple of days it was a pleasing team performance.
