Shildon are out of the Cup
Shildon AFC were knocked out of the Durham Challenge Cup at home to Billingham Synthonia on Wednesday 1st February 2017 after losing 5 – 4 in a penalty shoot-out.
Synners took an early lead when Shildon’s defence backed off captain Anthony Peacock allowing him to fire low into the bottom corner.
Lewis Wing went close twice for Shildon before No 9 Connor Winter rounded Shildon keeper but somehow fired wide.
Half Time: Shildon AFC 0 Billingham Synthonia 1
Synners keeper Jack McLaran pulled off two good saves at the start of the second half before Lewis Wing hit the post. It was all Shildon and they finally scored in stoppage time when Matty Robson’s left footer from way out gave keeper McLaran no chance.
Final Score: Shildon AFC 1 Billingham Synthonia 1
Goalscorer: Robson 90+
Subs: Purewal for Ellison 80.
Bookings: (Y) Groves 88, Dodds 88.
Man-of-the-Match: Lewis Wing
As there is no extra time, the game was decided on penalties. At 4 -4 it was sudden death. Jamie Harwood stepped up for Shildon but his weak shot was easily saved, and John Seaton converted for Synners to put them through.
Despite Shildon having nearly all the play, especially in the second half, they were not able to find the net until the last kick of the game. Another disappointing result.
