MATCH PREVIEW: Shildon vs Penrith

Saturday 24th August 2019, Dean Street, 3PM

By Ash Brighton

Railway men looking for strong response after a week to forget

Shildon will be hoping for a much need result this weekend as they welcome Penrith to Dean Street.

The home side head into Saturday’s match up on the back of two defeats in a row, both away from home, after Wednesday night’s 3-1 defeat to North Shields, so familiar surroundings may prove pivotal.

On the pitch though, manager Daniel Moore revealed on after Wednesday’s game that he will be without defender Jordan Lavery with what is believed to be a pulled groin to only add to a mounting list of absentees for the club.

However, the manager expects his team to manage well none the less “We’re a bit thin at the moment but we’ve got a squad for that reason”.

With Shildon currently sitting 12th in the Ebac Northern league division one, the manager has called for the Railway men to perform much better across the pitch.

“We’ve just got to keep going, defend the box better and take chances when they come along, we should have been 2-0 up before they (North Shields) even scored their first. “

Meanwhile the visitors Penrith head over to Shildon with only a solitary point to their name so far and will be hoping for much improvement at a ground where the away side have conceded 13 goals in just 2 league games.

MATCH PREVIEW | Manager Moore wants more of the same

Shildon boss Daniel Moore says he expects more attacking football to come as his side welcomes Garforth Town to Dean Street in an extra FA cup preliminary round meeting this Saturday.

Speaking after Tuesday night’s convincing 5-1 victory over Ryhope CW, Moore outlined his vision for Shildon and preferred style of play.

“I want my teams to go out and attack, that’s what I loved doing as a player, so we’ve got good players in the forward areas of the pitch to make an impact”.

All this is music to fans ears as 13 goals in just 2 games has spread optimism like wildfire throughout the town with impressive attendances reflecting the quality on the pitch.

Manager Moore also highlighted the quality in depth the Railway Men possess praising the impact made from the bench on Tuesday evening.

“I was very pleased with the reaction from our players. I’ve just said to them Work rate and effort was great. Players who came off the bench as well changed the game in different ways”.

Meanwhile, looking ahead to Saturday’s cup tie.

While early in the season, the manager has already thrown the gauntlet down to his men to make Dean Street a fortress for any visiting side.

“They’re coming to us and I’ve said to the lads in there, we’ve got to make this place the same as it has been the last 2 games. A hard place to come”.

MATCH PREVIEW | Shildon v Ryhope CW

By Ash Brighton

Shildon will be looking to maintain their rich goal-scoring touch, replicating their near perfect start to the league, welcoming a spirited Ryhope CW side to Dean Street.

The Railway Men kicked off their EBac Northern League Division One campaign in spectacular fashion with a merciless 8-1 demolition of Thornaby FC.

Multiple stand out performances had home supporters excited ahead of this Tuesday evening’s fixture, the pick of the bunch coming in the form of star forward Billy Greulich-Smith bagging himself a hat-trick.

Assistant manager Mark Hudson is also full of expectation heading into the next game.

“Delighted with the result first game of season. There was some good individual performances”.

However, whilst confident, Mark Hudson is also wary the threat an attacking Ryhope side can pose.

“We move on to Ryhope Tuesday night. We expect a tough game. They good going forward so we need to concentrate at all time.  Our players should be full of confidence. Go out express themselves”.

“We can’t get carried away though it’s only one game 3 points. I’ve told the players we need to put longer unbeaten runs together if we going to be successful this year. Inconsistent results can’t happen.”

Ryhope CW come into Tuesday nights fixture on the back of a 2-2 draw with West Auckland Town and will be in hot pursuit for their first victory and kickstarting their season.

MATCH PREVIEW: Shildon AFC vs Thornaby FC

Full steam ahead for the Railway men

Shildon welcome Thornaby FC to Dean Street this Saturday to raise the curtain on the new league season.

The home side head into the weekend’s meeting on the back of a mixed pre-season period, but will be hoping that come kick off, the drive for promotion can get off to the perfect start and catalyst what many are hoping will be a memorable campaign.

Club Sporting Director Martin Gray believes one crucial factor in the potential success of the coming season are the clubs summer dealings.

“The recruitment process for us has been very strong to not only bring great quality in as players but great experience that is vastly needed in this division.”

“The likes of Chay Liddle and Danny Craggs, they’re two players both with experience of winning this league.”

Shildon’s league campaign may not have reached the heights they were hoping for last season, but victory in the Durham Challenge Cup Final at the Stadium of Light in May certainly gave cause for celebration heading into this year’s campaign.

A celebration that Chairman David Dent expects to propel the side forward this time round.

“we can’t waste the opportunity that lies ahead and winning the Challenge Cup needs to be used as a catalyst for kicking on.”

“It is an opportunity that I believe we can grasp.”

While Martin Gray feels it’s time for the work on the pitch to start reflecting the efforts and expectation made off it.

“it’s a fresh start, there’s expectation just like any club but what the chairman has put in financially as well as the group of people he’s brought together to help support financially, we understand what is expected from us and that is to be challenging come end of the season for promotion.
