Young Shildon Bow Out of Durham Challenge Cup at Bishop Auckland

A depleted and youthful Shildon side exited the Durham FA Frank Pattison Challenge Cup at the first-round stage on Tuesday evening, falling to a 4-0 defeat away against local rivals Bishop Auckland in front of a crowd of 575.

Weakened by a succession of injuries and unavailabilities, the Railwaymen fielded an inexperienced lineup that faced sustained pressure from the opening whistle. The hosts pressed intently throughout the first half, but Shildon’s makeshift backline held firm, showing discipline and resolve under heavy pressure to keep the scores level at 0-0 heading into the interval.

The home side maintained their momentum after the restart, and the breakthrough arrived in the 58th minute when Amar Purewal found space to nod a free header into an open net. Shildon continued to work hard to stay in contention, but Bishop Auckland doubled their advantage on 72 minutes when a mishit strike from Lee Hume wrong-footed the visiting goalkeeper and rolled across the line. With the tie opening up in the closing stages, the hosts struck twice more late on, as Collins Unuareokpa added a third before Craig Moody capped the scoring with the pick of the night’s goals.

While the final scoreline proved harsh on the young Railwaymen—who finished the contest with seven players aged 18 or under on the pitch—the encounter provided valuable senior minutes for the club’s development prospects, who will look to apply the lessons learned as attention turns to the FA Vase and a fixture against Handsworth FC at Dean Street.

Attendance:  575
