Shildon AFC 1–0 Carlisle City FC: Reay Strike Secures FA Vase Progress

Shildon AFC secured their passage into the third round of the FA Vase with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Carlisle City at the J Denham Metals Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Playing host to the Cumbrian side for the second time this month, the Railwaymen controlled proceedings from the outset against a visiting team that set up to frustrate. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities, Shildon were repeatedly denied in a scoreless first half as they sought to unlock a stubborn defence.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 68th minute. Ben Reay showed excellent control inside the penalty area before turning sharply and firing a low shot into the corner of the net, rewarding the hosts for their sustained pressure.

Carlisle City were forced to respond and rallied in the closing stages, producing their only efforts on goal during a late flurry. However, unlike the teams’ recent league meeting earlier in the month, there was no late equalizer to break Shildon hearts.

The final whistle confirmed a fully deserved clean sheet and victory, sealing Shildon’s place in the hat for the FA Vase third round in front of an appreciative home crowd of 170.

Shildon will now turn their focus back to league commitments with a trip to Whitley Bay FC.
