Shildon AFC 5–1 Handsworth FC: Five-Star Railwaymen Secure FA Vase Progression

Shildon AFC booked their place in the FA Vase Second Round Proper on Saturday afternoon, overcoming an early deficit to secure a commanding 5–1 victory over Handsworth FC at the J Denham Metals Stadium. A crowd of 170 at Dean Street witnessed an accomplished second-half display that ensures the Railwaymen advance comfortably to the next stage of the national competition.

The opening exchanges were closely contested, with both sides finding avenues forward in an even start. It was the visitors who struck first on 20 minutes when Tyler Williams broke through the home defence and fired into the net from the edge of the penalty area. The game continued to swing end-to-end, but Shildon responded positively to going behind. Their persistence was rewarded before the interval when Billy Greulich-Smith seized upon an error in the Handsworth backline to slot home an equaliser and send the sides into the break level.

Facing a strong headwind in the second half, Shildon asserted control from the restart and never looked back. Just four minutes into the period, David Vincent found the target to edge the hosts ahead. The Railwaymen extended their cushion on 58 minutes through Ben Reay, before Greulich-Smith claimed his second of the afternoon in the 64th minute, applying the finish after neat setup play from Leighton Harris. Jack Blackford completed the scoring with Shildon’s fifth on 75 minutes, capping a disciplined attacking performance. The visitors’ afternoon worsened in the final minute when AJ Greaves was shown a straight red card for a professional foul that denied Jack Johnson a clear goalscoring opportunity.

It was an emphatic cup turnaround from Shildon, who adapted well to the conditions and showed clinical finishing. The Railwaymen now turn their attention to a league fixture away to Kendal Town FC.

Attendance: 170
