Late Irvine Leveller Leaves Railwaymen Frustrated at Dean Street

Shildon were forced to settle for a share of the points on Tuesday night after an 89th-minute equaliser from Carlisle City condemned the Railwaymen to a frustrating 1-1 draw at the J Denham Metals Stadium. Alfie Steel’s fine second-half strike had put the hosts on course for victory, but Jordan Irvine’s late intervention ensured the spoils were shared, representing five points dropped across the span of just four days for the Dean Street side.

The visitors began with purpose, asking early questions of the Shildon backline during the opening exchanges. Once the home side settled, however, they established firm control over the remainder of the first half. Despite dictating the tempo and carving out a couple of clear openings, Shildon lacked the clinical edge required to turn their territorial dominance into a tangible advantage, leaving the contest scoreless as the sides headed into the interval.

The breakthrough arrived just four minutes after the restart. In the 49th minute, a well-worked attacking sequence from the Railwaymen unlocked the Carlisle defence, allowing Alfie Steel to apply an emphatic finish, driving the ball cleanly into the top corner.

Buoyed by the opener, Shildon commanded proceedings for the subsequent half-hour. The hosts generated numerous opportunities to double their advantage and put the fixture beyond reach, but a failure to convert kept the Cumbrian side within touching distance.

Carlisle grew in belief as the contest entered the final quarter of an hour, enjoying greater spells of possession and committing numbers forward in search of parity. Their persistence paid off in the 89th minute when Jordan Irvine seized on an opening inside the area, firing high into the roof of the net. Shildon vehemently protested that goalkeeper Andy Jennison had been impeded in the build-up, but the referee dismissed the appeals and allowed the goal to stand.

While the result technically adds another point to Shildon’s Ebac Northern League tally, the timing of the late concession gave the afternoon the distinct emotional sting of a defeat. The Railwaymen will look to sharpen their finishing and regroup quickly ahead of their next league game.
