Steel Strike Earns Dominant Shildon Hard-Fought Three Points Against Horden

Shildon AFC secured a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Horden Community Welfare at the J Denham Metals Stadium at Dean Street to claim all three points in Ebac Northern League Division One. In front of a crowd of 316, the Railwaymen dictated the tempo from the opening whistle to the final whistle against a stubborn opposition.

The first half proved to be an exercise in patience for the hosts. Shildon controlled the vast majority of possession, but found themselves frustrated by a resolute defensive setup from the visitors, who defended in numbers throughout. Despite creating a handful of key opportunities during the opening 45 minutes, the Railwaymen were unable to convert their chances, sending the sides into the break goalless.

The second half brought increased tension and two major talking points. In the 64th minute, Horden were reduced to ten men when Ean Purdy received a second yellow card for a late challenge. Shildon continued to press their numerical advantage and were soon denied what appeared to be a clear penalty—a decision the referee later acknowledged post-match was an error on his part. However, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 68th minute. A well-constructed attack down the right flank carved open the visitor’s backline, allowing Alfie Steel to apply the decisive finish.

It was a disciplined and determined performance from Shildon, who showed great persistence to break down a compact opponent and collect a deserving three points.
