Steel Hat-Trick Secures Derby Comeback Victory for Shildon

Shildon AFC recorded their third derby victory of the season with a hard-fought 4-2 win over Newton Aycliffe FC in the Ebac Northern League Division 1. Played in front of a strong local crowd of 480 at the J Denham Metals Stadium at Dean Street, the hosts had to come from behind twice before ultimately taking control of the tie.

The opening forty-five minutes proved to be a closely contested affair with opportunities materialising at both ends of the pitch. The visitors broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when Sam Johnson lashed a powerful shot into the net from the edge of the penalty box. Their lead lasted just eight minutes, however, as David Vincent levelled the score for Shildon with a spectacular 25-yard volley. Just as the half seemed destined to end on even terms, a scramble in the penalty area fell kindly for Andrew Nelson, who slotted the ball past goalkeeper Andrew Jennison to send Newton Aycliffe into the break with a 2-1 advantage.

Shildon responded immediately following the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, Alfie Steel restored parity by accurately side-footing a cross from Leighton Harris into the back of the net. With the hosts now dictating the tempo and enjoying the bulk of possession, their sustained pressure eventually paid dividends in the 83rd minute. Capitalising on an error by the Aycliffe goalkeeper, Steel calmly rolled the ball into an empty net to give Shildon the lead for the first time in the afternoon. Deep into stoppage time, Steel completed a memorable hat-trick, applying the finishing touch to a fluid passing move down the right flank to put the game out of reach.

The 4-2 comeback victory showcased Shildon’s resilience and clinical finishing in front of their home support. Alfie Steel’s second-half treble proved decisive, providing the squad with excellent momentum as they look ahead to their next fixture.
