Shildon League Challenge Set back
Shildon AFC challenge for the league title took a set back at home on Saturday 7th March 2015 when they were surprising beaten 1- 0 by Consett, who are now managed by Colin Myers, who took control last month from Kenny Lindoe, both ex Shildon managers.
In blustery conditions, Consett kicked with the wind and early on No 9 Jack Walker beat three Shildon defenders but fired wide.
On 23 minutes a great shot from Matthew Slocombe produced an equally great one handed save from Shildon’s keeper Kyle Hayes.
For Shildon Billy Greulich-Smith headed over and Ben Wood fired straight at the keeper.
Before the break, on 38 minutes Shildon’s Darren Richardson was carried off the field with a bad leg injury.
Half Time: Shildon AFC 0 Consett 0
The best chance of the game so far fell to Consett’s Michael Mackay on 51 minutes when he was through but somehow missed the goal.
Minutes later Consett’s keeper Chris Elliott dropped the ball from a corner for Billy Greulich-Smith’s shot to be cleared off the line by a defender.
Shildon were on top with Jamie Harwood firing over the bar from 6 yards and Bobby Moore only 5 yards out trying to place the ball instead off blasting it in.
On 67 minutes Adam Rundle crossed to Ben Wood whose header hit the post and the rebound was put away by Paul Connor, but he was judged to be off side.
With 6 minutes remaining Consett score the only goal of the game when a right wing corner was palmed out by Shildon’s keeper Kyle Hayes to No 11 Joshua Gray who cracked the ball into the right corner of the net.
Final Score: Shildon AFC 0 Consett 1
Goalscorer: Gray 84
Subs: Chapman for Richardson 38, Rundle for Ellison 65, Rae for Connor 70.
Bookings: (Y) Wood
Shildon gave the ball away far too easily throughout the game today and were not at their best. The manager said it was a tired team performance. In the end things didn’t work out too badly on the day as all the other possible title contenders dropped points. The league is still wide open with possibly 6 teams still capable of winning the championship. Shildon still have 12 games to play. On Wednesday 11th March they are at home to Ashington and then on Saturday 14th March local rivals Bishop Auckland are at Dean Street.

Shildon AFC Reach Second Successive County Cup Final
Shildon AFC reached the final of the Durham Challenge Cup for the 2nd year running with a 2 – 1 away win at Spennymoor Town on Tuesday 3rd March 2015.
Tonight’s game was a re-run of last season’s final which the Railwaymen won by the same 2 – 1 score line at Billingham Synthonia’s ground on Good Friday.
Both side have made light work of reaching this stage of the competition as neither side had conceded a goal, with Spennymoor able to play every round at home at the Brewery Field.
Shildon stunned Moors with an early goal on just 7 minutes when Mark Doninger picked up the ball unchallenged and fired home a low right foot shot from 20 yards.
On 22 minutes Paul Connor was clean through for the second time with Moors advancing keeper Luke Coddington bringing him down for a clear penalty which Lee Scroggins tucked away for 2 – 0 to the visitors.
Half Time: Spennymoor Town 0 Shildon AFC 2
Moors looked far more threatening in the 2nd half and on 53 minutes they pulled a goal back in a goalmouth scramble with Liam Henderson, Michael Roberts and Anthony Peacock all having shots blocked before Peacock forced the ball home from 6 yards.
Despite all the home side’s pressure they didn’t seriously trouble the Shildon defence apart from a John McReady shot on 62 minutes and in the final minute the same player McReady forced Shildon keeper to pull off a one handed save.
Final Score: Spennymoor Town 1 Shildon AFC 2
Goalscorers: Doninger 7, Scroggins 23.
Subs: Richardson for Brackstone 61, Rae for Wood 67, Ellison for Doninger 79.

An Evenly Matched Affair
Shildon AFC are still 3rd in the league after an enthralling evenly matched 2 – 2 home draw against top of the league side West Auckland Town on Saturday 28th February 2015.
In front of a big crowd, Shildon nearly scored in the 1st minute when Jamie Harwood found Lee Scroggins but his shot was well blocked with his body by keeper Dan Lowson.
West scored a minute later with their first attack of the game when Lewis Galpin found ex Shildon forward Craig Ruddy, who looked suspiciously off side, for him to put the ball past keeper Kyle Hayes.
Shildon came slowly into the game and were level on 24 minutes when Lee Scroggins found Paul Connor whose cool right footer beat keeper Lowson. Connor had the ball in the net again, but the goal was ruled off side by the assistant referee.
On 33 minutes West’s Craig Ruddy’s shot was deflected wide for a corner, then Daryll Hall headed just over the bar. Shortly after, Shildon’s keeper Kyle Hayes pulled off two great saves, the first from Alex Francis and then from Mattie Moffat, before the ball was eventually cleared off the line.
Half Time: Shildon AFC 1 West Auckland Town 1
Early in the 2nd half it was end to end stuff but not many clear cut chances, with Mattie Moffat firing over the bar just before the hour.
Shildon went behind for the 2nd time on 71 minutes when Micky Tait fired into the area for top notch poacher Mattie Moffat to poke the ball home.
The lead was short lived as the Railwaymen were level minutes later when Paul Connor put in a brilliant cross from the right and Mark Doninger blasted a cracking goal into the roof of the next from close range.
Shildon were reduced to 10 men on 80 minutes when Sam Hodgson received his 2nd yellow card, and with the one man advantage West’s player/manager Steven Skinner send central defender Daryll Hall into the attack in the quest for the winner. But with just 3 minutes remaining this move nearly backfired on him as Shildon’s Mark Doninger crossed to the unmarked Adam Rundle, but he headed wide with the goal at his mercy.
Final Score: Shildon AFC 2 West Auckland Town 2
Goalscorers: Connor 24, Doninger 77.
Subs: Richardson for Chapman 46, Rundle for Emms 75, Ellison for Wood 81.
Bookings: (R) Hodgson 80 (Y) Emms 75, Moore 90.
A hard fought game between two evenly matched sides. In the end a draw was a fair result. After today’s results West have been knocked off the top of the league with Guisborough taking over the top spot. They have 67 points and played 33 games. West, in 2nd place are on 66 points and played 32 games, whilst Shildon are 3rd on 63 points but have only played 29 games. The league title is still wide open.
