Shildon V Newcastle Benfield

Shildon AFC got back to winning ways on Saturday 6th September at Dean Street, with a 2 – 1 win against Newcastle Benfield, with both goals being scored quite late in the game.

After Shildon’s keeper tipped over a long range effort from Mark Convery, Shildon created several chances to open the score. Mark Hudson fired straight at the keeper then headed wide, before Chris Emms’ shot was tipped over. Just before the break Emms, Paul Connor and Ben Wood all had shots one after another blocked by Benfield’s defenders.

Half Time: Shildon AFC 0 Newcastle Benfield 0.

Early in the second half Shildon had all the possession, but against the run of play, Benfield took the lead on 65 minutes when Michael Riley broke away and found Paul Brayson, who shot low past Lewis Graham.

Shildon had numerous corners and pressed hard for the equaliser, and on 83 minutes Paul Connor fired over the keeper but the ball was headed off the line by Chris Carr. Two minutes later, with time running out, the Railwaymen got their reward when Jamie Harwood fired through a crowd of players for 1 – 1.

With only a minute remaining, Micky Rae cracked in a great goal from 25 yards out for victory.

Final Score: Shildon AFC 2 Newcastle Benfield 1.

Goals: Harwood 85, Rae 89.

Subs: Rae for Emms 66, Ruddy for Wood 66, Atkin for Hudson 80.

Padiham V Shildon

Shildon AFC are through to the next round of the F.A. Cup after a 1 – 0 away victory at Padiham, near Burnley, who play in the Evostik Northern Premier League, which includes Darlington 1883 and Spennymoor.

The first chance fell to The Stork’s No 9 Paul Fildes, whose shot was punched away by Shildon’s keeper Lewis Graham. Then Sam Garvie fired just wide, before on the half hour Daniel Moore was brought down in the box for a spot kick. Up stepped reliable penalty taker captain Mark Hudson to give Shildon a deserved lead.

Half Time: Padiham 0 Shildon AFC 1.

Early on in the 2nd half Shildon had early possession before a Padiham shot was parried away by keeper Graham to No 11 Kurt Willoughby, but somehow Carl Jones made a brilliant block with his feet. On the hour a Carl Jones effort was goal-bound but was headed off the line by Padiham’s stat man Louis Haynes. Ten minutes later Shildon’s man-of-the-match Daniel Moore fired a long range drive but it hit the post and bounced back into play. Near the end Ben Wood and Billy Greulich-Smith were both through but failed to add to the score.

Final Score: Padiham 0 Shildon AFC 1.

Goalscorer: Hudson 30.

Man-of-the-Match: Daniel Moore.

After the match manager Gary Forrest said, “The 1st half was a good solid performance but in the 2nd half we were not as good. Perhaps the long 3 hour journey down to Lancashire wasn’t the best preparation for the game. Nevertheless, we still deserved to win”.

Shildon V Crook Town

Just nine days ago Shildon AFC trounced Crook Town, winning 7-0 in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round.Crook visited Dean Street once again on Bank Holiday Monday, 23rd August, for a league fixture. The score, however, was much closer than the last match, with Shildon only winning 3 – 2.

Two early chances fell to Shildon’s Lee Scroggins before the Railwaymen eventually went 1 – 0 up after a Ben Wood cross from the left found Mark Hudson whose long range header beat ‘keeper Ryan Graham. Two minutes later Ben Wood put Michael Rae through on goal, and he slotted home to make it 2–0.

Shildon gifted Crook a lifeline just 3 minutes later. Lee Scroggins committed a silly foul on Crook’s Jason Brazaukas, conceding a penalty which Kalumn Holbrook converted.

Things soon got even worse for Shildon. It was all square on 38 minutes after Shildon were hit on the break. The equaliser came after a long through ball from well inside their own half put Crook’s Jason Brazaukas through and he rounded the keeper.

Half Time: Shildon AFC 2 Crook Town 2

Shildon regained the lead from a corner just 4 minutes into the 2nd half. Despite Crook having 10 players camped in the box, Michael Rae headed on to Paul Connor who turned the ball in from close range through a crowd of players. Thereafter, chances fell to Paul Connor, Sam Garvie, Chris Emms and Lee Scroggins, but all were unable to change chances into goals.

Final Score: Shildon AFC 3 Crook Town 2

Shildon 1-3 Hamilton Academical

Two goals in the final nine minutes and two penalties were the difference between the sides as Shildon took on Scottish Premiership opposition at Dean Street. The Railwaymen took the lead through Paul Connor and almost held on to it until half time but a 45th minute penalty, converted by Jason Scotland, brought the visitors back into the game. Shildon received an intense lesson in defending in the second half and held out until late in the game, but two goals in the final nine minutes, including another penalty, gave the top flight Scottish side a deserved but hard fought victory.
