West Auckland v Shildon AFC

The Twelfth Man turned out in force at West Auckland this afternoon for the game of the day in the FA Vase.

Unfortunately for the Railwaymen it was a bad day at the office, and although the sides were evenly matched throughout, a solitary goal for the home side separated the teams and saw Shildon exit this season’s tournament after just one match.

Shildon and West couldn’t have wished for a worse draw and the game proved to be a tight and tense affair with very few chances for either side.

There was no effort of note in the entire first 45 minutes and it was Shildon who should have taken the lead at the beginning of the second half when Ben Wood found space in the box and set up a glorious opportunity for himself.

But the normally composed finisher opted for power and, instead of calmly placing the ball into the inviting net, swiped wildly and sent it high and wide of the target.

It was a game in which the referee leaned heavily in favour the home side in his decision making and in the 65th minute, this tendency proved fatal for the visitors.

What appeared to be a free kick for Shildon when Mark Hudson was bundled to the ground was waved away by the official. However, he could not be blamed for the players’ failure to play on and, as they stopped to protest the foul, Garthwaite strode forward uncontested and drove a powerful shot high into the roof of the net from 20 yards.

Shildon almost equalised immediately, but a goalmouth scramble ricocheted harmlessly into Nixon’s arms.

Try as they might, Shildon could not find an equaliser and late in the game it took a goal line clearance to keep the score down to one-nil.

Unfortunately time ran out on last year’s FA Vase semi-finalists, but the Railwaymen can be consoled in the knowledge that they remain in top spot in the league and can now focus their attentions on an historic tilt at this season’s title.

The disappointment of the result will stay with the squad, the supporters and the town in the coming days, but this team of proven winners will be ready to go again in the league next Friday evening at Crook Town.

Seaton Carew  5  1  SHILDON

Scorers  –  Jack Leighton

Man of the Match – Ben Moore

The Shildon under 8’s travelled to Seaton Carew this Sunday, the lads were looking forward to the game as they had been beaten by them at the start of the season.  A goal from Jack Leighton very early in the first half seemed to spur the lads on but unfortunately it was to be their only game of the match.  The home side played some physical football, the amount of shirt pulling and shoving was unbelievable!  The Shildon lads did themselves proud by not retaliating to the many fouls, they played some excellent football and worked very well as a team. The game ended 5 – 1 to Seaton.  Ben Moore received the man of the match trophy for a very strong performance.

The tables were turned for the friendly match as Shildon dominated from the kick off.  Goals came from James Plews and Will White and Jack Leighton scored twice.  Shildon won 4-1. Jake Baldwin was awarded the trophy for the most improved player for some brilliant work in defence.

SHILDON  1  4  Stranton FC Tigers

Scorers  – Cole Layfield

Man of the Match – James Douthwaite

Shildon hosted Stranton FC at the Scout Field.   Although they started slowly they began to build some good attacking play midway through the first half.  There was some confusion however as Stranton took the lead right on half time.  Cole Layfield went down under a heavy challenge and all the players stopped thinking a free kick was going to be awarded.  Stranton put the ball into the net but in the confusion the goal stood. Shildon had no time to answer as the half time whistle sounded seconds later.

The second half saw Shildon go close on several occasions but Stranton increased their lead with a fine long range effort.  Shildon kept pressing but it wasn’t to be as Stranton netted twice more.  Cole Layfield eventually got the goal Shildon deserved from a good piece of team play. The Mom award went to James Douthwaite who fought hard the whole game and never gave Stranton any time on the ball.

The second game saw Harrison Taylor enter the proceedings and immediately made his mark with his first goal for Shildon. The new signing went on to play the full game although not fully fit he caused Stranton many problems.  Shildon were now showing what they are really capable of. 2 goals from flying winger Anth Jary gave Shildon the upper hand and when Michael Gaffney broke through to play in team mate Kian Dixon for Shildon’s fourth the match was all but won.  Cole Layfield rounded off the scoring.  The final score Shildon 5 Stranton FC 1.  Mom was Harrison Taylor.

The team was:  Jamie Donohue, Ashley Jardine, Caitlyn Lawton, Cole Layfield, Anth Jary, James Douthwaite,  Michael Gaffney, Kian Dixon, Kai Chadwick, Harrison Taylor.

Well played everyone. Keep putting the work in and the rewards will come.

Ferryhill  1  5  SHILDON

Scorers  – Kane Hopwood (2)  Jacob Race (2)  James Rusby (1)

Man of the Match – Jacob Race

Shildon started brightly and with 4mins gone scored their 1st goal, following a good shot by Ellie Geary that was well saved by the keeper who carried it out only for Kane Hopwood to pounce on the rebound and slot the ball home.  Good all round attacking play saw more down the left side and with a smart 1 2 James scored with a shot to the bottom corner.  With Shildon now well on top Jacob Race scored from another smart move to make it 3-0.

Into the 2nd half, Shildon maintained the pressure and were rewarded when Jacob Race scored with a powerful right foot shot to the top of the net.  Ferryhill didn’t drop their heads and pulled away from the defence to score. With 4 mins left another neat pass saw Kane Hopwood finish with a left foot shot in the bottom corner.

Another good result, well done everyone!

SHILDON  0  5  Billingham Town

Man of the Match – Oliver Brown

Shildon played host to Billingham Town, who currently hold second place in the league table.  Billingham were strong from the start and Shildon struggled to keep pace.  The visitors took the lead and the second came shortly after.  Shildon fought on and were looking to get back in the game, but couldn’t quite find the back of the net.  Shildon created more chances after the break and defended well but with no subs they grew tired giving Billingham the chance to extend their lead with a fine strike from the Billingham forward.  Another two goals in the last five minutes left the home side disappointed with their 5 – 0 defeat.

A special mention has to go to the under 11’s keeper Oliver Brown, who showed some superb goalkeeping skills and was awarded man of the match for the 4th time this season!

Well done Olly!!

SHILDON  4  5  Tollesby

Scorers  – Noah McCourt (3) Jack Comerford (1)

Shildon welcomed Tollesby to the Scout Field, in what proved to be a very entertaining game.  Shildon’s Noah McCourt opened the scoring on 11 minutes as he controlled the ball and shot across the keeper in to the right hand corner.  On 29 minutes, Noah headed his second goal from a corner, and on 32 minutes he completed his hat trick with a near post finish after great wing work by Adam Nodding.  With half time approaching Tollesby reduced the arrears, followed quickly by a second goal from a free kick right on half time.

In to the second half, and on 40 minutes Tollesby equalised .  Shildon went straight back up, and from a corner, a shot heading towards the goal was stopped on the line by a stray arm, but the penalty was not given.  5 minutes later, Tollesby took the lead but the Shildon heads didn’t drop.  Good work on the left fed the ball across to the right of the box and Jack Comerford fired a left foot shot to level the scores again.  With both teams going for the win, Tollesby took their chance with 8 minutes left.

A great game of football, which shows how far the team have come in twelve months.
