Late Redcar Penalty Denies Shildon on the Road
The Railwaymen were forced to settle for a point on Saturday afternoon after a late equaliser saw them draw 1-1 against Redcar Town at Mo Mowlam Park. For the second consecutive week, the Railwaymen saw a hard-earned lead slip in the dying stages of an Ebac Northern League Division One clash, extending their winless league run to four matches in front of a crowd of 235.
The visitors dominated the opening period, asserting control right from the kickoff and carving out numerous opportunities. Despite creating a sequence of promising openings, Shildon found a clinical touch elusive, though they broke the deadlock after just 16 minutes. Forward Benji Urwin produced an emphatic finish to give Shildon a deserved 1-0 advantage—ultimately the solitary chance converted amidst a wave of first-half pressure.
The pattern of play shifted noticeably after the interval, with Redcar Town emerging with renewed intent and committing men forward. Shildon goalkeeper Andy Jennison delivered a commanding performance to marshal his box and keep the hosts at bay throughout sustained pressure.
Disaster struck for the Railwaymen in the 85th minute, however, when the referee adjudged that defender Jon Weirs had brought down Redcar’s Kayden Robinson-Coley inside the 18-yard box. Redcar’s Craig Gott stepped up to take the resulting penalty, sending Jennison the wrong way from the spot to level the score. Energised by the breakthrough, the home side pressed heavily in search of a stoppage-time winner, but Shildon held firm under late pressure to ensure the spoils were shared.
While frustrated to concede so late after controlling large parts of the first half, Shildon will take heart from the resilience shown by man of the match Andy Jennison. Chris Hughes’ side will look to turn these competitive displays back into winning ways as the focus shifts to the Durham FA ‘Frank Pattison’ Challenge Cup on Tuesday.
