The Shildon Under 8’s were away to Middleton Rangers Saints.

From the off, it was obvious it was going to be a hard game against a very strong side.  Shildon played well, but nothing seemed to go their way.  A very unlucky own goal put MRS in the lead early.  Ben Moore in goal pulled off some excellent saves. The final score was 2 nil to Middleton Rangers Saints.

It was more of the same for the second game.  The lads began to play more positively, and were passing the ball really well.  Will White managed to score Shildon’s only goal of the day.  Middleton Rangers managed to win 3-1.  James Plews was awarded the man of the match trophy.

Under 9’s

SHILDON  1  9  Kirk Merrington

Scorers – Anth Jary

Man of the match – Anth Jary

This was the U9’s second defeat in as many weeks.  However the team’s determination was strongly evident throughout.  Shildon lost there goalkeeper early in the game and faced an uphill battle from then on.  Anth Jary scored Shildon’s goal and received the MoM award for the second week running.  In the second half Shildon were the better team but the goals just weren’t coming.

In the second game, Cole Layfield resumed playing outfield as Shildon’s keeper had recovered and scored a well executed goal from a tight angle. Anth Jary added a second in the second half.  The final score Shildon 2 Kirk Merrington 7.

This team is learning all the time and are confident they will be back to winning ways sooner rather than later.  If they keep improving throughout the team as they have been the results will come.

Under 10’s

SHILDON  2  1  Middleton Rangers

Scorers – Kane Hopwood (1) James Rusby (1)

Man of the match – Ellie Geary

Shildon progressed to the next round of the league cup after beating higher league opposition for the second time.  After a bright start from Shildon, Middleton Rangers came into the game resulting in end to end chances.  Shildon took the lead following a smartly placed free kick from Kane Hopwood.  In the 2nd half Middleton equalised with a good shot to the near post.  Just as extra time was looming Shildon’s pressure told and following a throw in from James Rusby to a crowded box Shildon scored the 2nd goal.

Outstanding play by all, especially Shildon’s defence who were under continuous pressure from Middleton Rangers.

Under 11’s

Seaton Carew Tigers  6  0  SHILDON

Scorers –

Man of the Match – Oliver Brown

Shildon under 11’s are still fighting for their first win after they failed to deliver on this occasion against a strong Seaton Carew side.  The boys played one of their best performances to date, with plenty of opportunities, however the home side’s goalie was on top form ensuring a clean sheet.

Having started the season with only 8 players, Shildon under 11’s have gained 3 new players in the last few weeks and the team are starting to show great improvements as they adjust to their new positions.

Next week the team take on Eaglescliffe, who like us, are fighting for their first win.  This should should make an interesting game.

Under 13’s

Eaglescliffe Elementis  10  2  SHILDON

Scorers – Ben Oliver (1)  Jack Mortimer (1)

Man of the Match –

Shildon travelled to Eaglescliffe Elementis, who are 2 leagues higher, for a challenge cup tie.  From the start, Shildon’s defence were under pressure, unable to handle the constant runs from midfield and balls over the top, and a combination of good goalkeeping by Niall Higham and poor finishing ensured the tie wasn’t out of sight early on.  Elementis finally got the breakthrough and doubled their lead very quickly.  Shildon hit back with a fine finish from Ben Oliver.  Into the second half, Elementis extended the lead again, before Jack Mortimer reduced the arrears.  With the tie in the balance, Elementis turned the screw and scored a further 8 goals without reply.

Shildon top league table

Shildon marched to the top of the Northern League Division One table tonight after a comfortable win against ten-man Morpeth Town.

The home side had their numbers reduced within 15 minutes when Steven Anderson received a straight red card for kicking Mark Hudson in the face while the Shildon captain lay on the ground after being fouled.

Although both sides had chances in the first period, Shildon’s numerical advantage saw them come closest to opening the scoring. Ben Wood’s curling shot cannoned off the bar while Paul Connor forced an excellent save from Steven Mundy. The home goalkeeper was performing heroics to keep Shildon at bay during the first half.

The home side went into the break having survived the onslaught, but they had barely drawn breath in the second half before the Railwaymen were two up.

Two minutes after the restart, Ben Wood scored a curling, dipping free kick from 22 yards and, almost immediately, Sam Garvie fed Paul Connor who deftly chipped the keeper for a swift two-goal lead that allowed Shildon to take complete control of the match.

The Railwaymen cruised through the remainder of the tie before adding two late goals to more accurately reflect the dominance of the visitors. Mark Hudson fed Sam Garvie on the right edge of the box for the striker to slot home before the captain added to the tally himself by dispatching a penalty in the 90th minute.

Shildon’s competitiors for top spot both slipped up in tough ties this afternoon. Celtic Nation lost at home to ten man West Auckland while Spennymoor were held at Heritage Park by Bishop Auckland.

The results mean that Shildon, for the first time since season 2009-10 – and with six home matches in a row coming up – sit proudly atop the league table this evening.
