Shildon Secure First Round Spot with Comfortable Victory at Garstang

Shildon AFC booked their place in the FA Vase First Round Proper with a decisive 5-0 victory over Garstang FC in the Second Qualifying Round. Facing an opponent playing a tier below them in the non-league pyramid, the Railwaymen controlled the majority of the contest to ensure their progression to the next stage of the competition.

The visitors established early dominance at the Riverside Ground, creating several promising openings during a fast-paced opening period, though initial opportunities went begging. The breakthrough arrived in the 26th minute when a well-worked team move found Joe Posthill, who finished cleanly to give Shildon the lead. Just eight minutes later, the advantage was doubled when Alfie Steel reacted quickest inside the penalty area to poke the ball home.

Garstang mounted a resilient defensive effort to limit the damage for a large spell following the second goal. However, Shildon’s superior match fitness ultimately told during the closing stages, as the visitors broke through the home defence three times in the final 13 minutes. Posthill claimed his second of the afternoon on 77 minutes to extend the lead to three. Substitute Jack Blackford then capped off the dominant display late on, netting a swift brace with strikes in the 85th and 93rd minutes to round off the scoring.

It was a disciplined and efficient performance from the Railwaymen, who executed their game plan effectively from front to back. Attention now turns to the First Round Proper, where Shildon will host Handsworth at the J Denham Metals Stadium at Dean Street.
