Shildon Pay the Price for Missed Chances in Season Opener

Shildon’s new campaign began with frustration rather than fireworks as a flurry of squandered chances left them empty‑handed in a breathless opener at Dean Street.

Whitley Bay struck inside two minutes, Alfie Livermore bursting through a flat back line before coolly lifting the ball over Andy Jennison to silence the home crowd. From there, Shildon created enough to win two matches, rattling the crossbar twice, clipping the post, and passing up a handful of golden opportunities. Somehow, the interval arrived with the visitors still clinging to their early lead.

The breakthrough finally came on 55 minutes. A scramble in the box ended with Alfie Steel forcing the ball over the line, a deserved equaliser after relentless pressure. But Shildon’s relief was short‑lived. Eight minutes later, Tom Price’s mistimed challenge on Mackenzie Sharp handed Bay a penalty, and the striker dusted himself off to send Jennison the wrong way.

Shildon refused to fold. A quickly taken free‑kick released Jack Blackford, who unleashed a stunning strike into the top corner to level the contest again on 68 minutes.

With momentum behind them, the Railwaymen pushed bodies forward in search of a winner — and were punished. Sharp robbed Alfie Myers Smith near halfway, surged clear, rounded Jennison and rolled home the decisive goal.

A disappointing start for Shildon, no doubt, but for the neutral this was a cracking advert for early‑season drama: goals, chaos, and chances galore.
