Consett 0 Shildon 2, Match Report by Adam Gill

Shildon picked up a crucial three points as they defeated Consett away from home at the Belle View Stadium in the Ebac Northern League Division One.

Kurt Matthews gave the visitors the lead in the 14th minute when he headed home from David Palmer’s free kick. Michael Sweet doubled the away sides lead in the 77th minute, after good work from Dean Thexton.

Shildon had the first chance of the game, when Palmer cut inside before curling his effort just over the bar from 25 yards.

The visitors took the lead, when Palmer’s whipped free kick was met by the head of Matthews, who headed into the bottom corner from six yards.

Consett came close to an equaliser 25 minutes in, when a long ball over the top was met by Darren Holden, however his first time volley went over the bar.

The Railwaymen had a chance to double their lead, when Palmer’s corner was met by the head of Daniel Moore, who saw his powerful header saved by Kyle Hayes.

Shildon doubled their advantage in the 77th minute, when Thexton’s first time lay off set up Sweet, who fired low from 25 yards into the bottom corner.

Matthews almost added his second of the game six minutes from time, when he turned his man before firing his effort from 30 yards off the bar.

Shildon held on for all three points which sees them move to sixth place, seven points off league leaders Hebburn Town.

Shildon are into the semi final of the Durham Challenge Cup with a 6-1 victory over Consett at Dean Street.

In the squad were 9 players under the age of 21 with 17 year old Mason Hurworth impressing from the start.

Ben Trotter (9 mins) opened the scoring with a header from a Matty Robson only for Luke Carr to equalise after 22mins. Brad Hird was then fouled in the box and Billy Greulich-Smith restored the advantage.

In the second half David Palmer added the 3rd, Brad Hird the 4th and Nathan Steel the 5th. Steven Johnson then produced some great play to beat his man and set up Ben Trotter to finish the scoring.

Shildon took all 3 points away to league leaders Consett

Zak Atkinson scored his first goal for the club since his move from Ashington after 2 minutes to give the visitors the perfect start.

Billy Greulich-Smith scored his 5th goal in his last 6 games to seal the win after 66mins heading in from a few yards out. Nathan Steel could of made it 3 but former Shildon stopper Kyle Hayes saved in the 92nd minute.

Shildon moved to 5th place in the Northern League with 2 late goals giving them all three points against Consett.

Adam Burnicle opened the scoring in the 89th minute and then Kyle Patton two minutes later added the second and his first goal for the club.

Shildon remain in 3rd position in the Northern League despite a 3-0 reverse at Consett.

Marc Ellison, unfortunately, turned the ball past Nick Liversedge in the Shildon goal to give the hosts the lead after 30 mins. With three minutes left in the first half, Michael Sweet scored after a  mix up in the Shildon defence.

With 15 minutes left of the game Sweet scored his second of the game tapping in a rebound after a great save by Liversedge.
