A Very Comfortable Win

Top of the league Shildon AFC played bottom club West Auckland Town at Dean Street on Saturday 12th September 2015 with the class difference  evident from the kick off , the Railwaymen winning easily 4 – 0, with all the goals coming in the first half.

On 19 minutes a Matty Robson cross was headed in by Billy Greulich-Smith. Constant pressure paid off just before the half hour when Ben Wood crossed for Paul Connor to head past keeper David Knight. Minutes later Matty Robson squared the ball to Daniel Moore whose right foot curler found the roof of the net. Just before the interval a corner kick was cleared out to Daniel Moore who blasted through a crowded defence for 4 – 0 and game well and truly over for West.

As in the first half it was one-way-traffic in the second, but despite having all the possession Shildon were unable to capitalise on their superiority. They missed chance after chance and should have doubled their score, with Daniel Moore, Billy Greulich-Smith, Paul Connor and Kyle Fryatt all squandering good scoring opportunities.

Washington 4 Shildon 2

Shildon AFC Beaten by Washington

Top of the league Shildon AFC travelled to second placed Washington FC on Tuesday 8th September 2015 in the Ebac Northern League, with the Railwaymen going down 4 – 2.

The Mechanics are the surprise team of the season, having not lost a single game so far in all competitions.

They were ahead after just 90 seconds when captain Mark Davison fired past Shildon’s stand in keeper Jake Johnson.

Shildon thought they had equalised after 6 minutes but Mark Doninger’s shot was ruled off side. However, they did level on 11 minutes when Paul Connor found Jonathan Davis.

Washington were ahead straight from the kick off when a right wing cross found Michael Cochrane whose long range drive beat injured keeper Johnson.

The home side piled on the pressure with Shildon’s Dan groves clearing off the line.

It was 3 – 1 on 69 minutes when a right corner gave Ross Preston a free header. Minutes later Washington’s Michael Coglan’s free kick hit the bar.

Against the run of play Shildon pulled a goal back when Bobby Moore fired low into the bottom corner.

Washington extended their lead on 80 minutes when John Butler head home from close range.

Shildon can have no qualms about the result as Washington were the far better side on the night, particularly in the second half.

Shildon 0 Morpeth 1

Shildon AFC are beaten for the first time.

Top of the league Shildon AFC suffered their first defeat of the season in the league after going down 1- 0 against 2nd place Morpeth Town on Bank Holiday Monday 31st August 2015, the goal coming with just one minute remaining.

Shildon could easily have been 3 up in the first 11 minutes. In the 2nd minute a Kyle Fryatt electrifying run found Lewis Wing whose 20 yarder hit the top of the bar with the keeper beaten. A minute later Micky Rae had a great chance with a one on one with the keeper but his shot was weak. On 11 minutes Gary Brown fired just wide.

For Morpeth, No 7 Sean Taylor had a brilliant chance but he shot over from 5 yards.

As an evenly matched 1st half Morpeth looked far more dangerous in the 2nd and as the game went on they got stronger, with Shildon’s Gary Brown and Bobby Moore defending brilliantly.

After 84 minutes Bobby Moore cleared off the line and after more pressure from Morpeth, Gary Brown also headed off the line, but Ben Sayer’s right footer sealed the win for Town on 89 minutes.

Shildon cannot have any complaints as the best team won. They were the only side threatening in the 2nd half.
