Shildon AFC & Local Community to benefit from Club Sponsorship

Shildon Association Football Club (AFC) has joined forces with Livin to secure a three year sponsorship partnership set to benefit the community by encouraging more local young people to get involved in sport.

As part of the sponsorship new kits will be purchased and funding will be provided to the club’s development team to enable more budding sports stars to take up football.

With long-standing roots in the community, Shildon AFC was established in 1890 and today competes in the Ebac Northern League first division after a number of successful years. The club has nine youth teams within its development centre, in addition to the first team.

David Dent, chairman of Shildon AFC said: “We are delighted to secure the sponsorship with Livin. The money will go a long way to help the club be the best it can be on and off the pitch. It will ensure that we can compete at the very top of the Northern League and support our growing development centre, attracting new players and supporters to Dean Street.”

Alan Boddy, director of operations, for Livin, said: “We have strong connections with the community in Shildon and we have worked closely with Sunderland AFC charity the Foundation of Light to establish the Foundations Community Hub in the town centre. Through this we work with local schools and community groups to help more people get into sport, education, training and employment. This partnership continues this work by helping Shildon AFC to grow its reputation as a community club by enhancing its offer to young people and the local community.”

Talk in with Micky Barron at Shildon AFC Social Club

Our series of hugely successful talk ins will conclude on Friday June 22nd when our guest speaker will be our very own Micky Barron.

Micky started his career at Middlesbrough. Spending four years at the club before going out on loan to Hartlepool United. Micky made his debut for Hartlepool against Carlisle United. During his loan spell Barron made 14 appearances. Middlesbrough then released Barron and he signed permanently for Hartlepool.

From 1999 to 2005, Barron spent the majority of that term as club captain and made over 326 appearances for the club and has the eighth most total number of appearances for the club.

He was in the Hartlepool side that had three consecutive Football League Third Division play-off semi-final defeats before winning promotion in 2002–03 but being pipped to the league title by Rushden & Diamonds.

He led out the Hartlepool team as captain in their League One play-off final in May 2005 against Sheffield Wednesday where a late equaliser eight minutes from time denied Pools their first ever promotion to the Championship, Hartlepool went on to lose in extra-time 4–2 in front of a crowd of 59,808 at the Millennium Stadium.

To celebrate 10 seasons with the club, a series of events were held such as testimonial dinner with Bobby Robson as guest speaker. Barron could only attend the later stages of the dinner as he was involved in a reserve team match while trying to make his comeback from injury. A testimonial game, against Leeds United which Hartlepool won 2–1, was also held.During his time on the sidelines, he became a regular special guest commentator on Pool’s World, the Hartlepool United audio commentary service.

It promises to be an entertaining evening.
