West Auckland 0 Shildon 4

Shildon moved back to the top of the Ebac Northern League Division One with a 4-0 victory over local rivals West Auckland.

On a pitch that was heavy going from the start Shildon still played the ball well and adapted better to the conditions.

By half time the score was 3-0 to Shildon with Anthony Bell scoring 2 (1 Pen) and also supplying the cross for Ben Wood to score.

At half time the referee stayed out with his assistants to have a good look at the pitch but deemed it fit enough play on.

Anthony Bell completed his hat trick and the scoring for Shildon in the second half.

With 20 mins to go Bobby Moore was given a red card for a tackle on Adam Burnicle when he was through on goal.

A Very Comfortable Win

Top of the league Shildon AFC played bottom club West Auckland Town at Dean Street on Saturday 12th September 2015 with the class difference  evident from the kick off , the Railwaymen winning easily 4 – 0, with all the goals coming in the first half.

On 19 minutes a Matty Robson cross was headed in by Billy Greulich-Smith. Constant pressure paid off just before the half hour when Ben Wood crossed for Paul Connor to head past keeper David Knight. Minutes later Matty Robson squared the ball to Daniel Moore whose right foot curler found the roof of the net. Just before the interval a corner kick was cleared out to Daniel Moore who blasted through a crowded defence for 4 – 0 and game well and truly over for West.

As in the first half it was one-way-traffic in the second, but despite having all the possession Shildon were unable to capitalise on their superiority. They missed chance after chance and should have doubled their score, with Daniel Moore, Billy Greulich-Smith, Paul Connor and Kyle Fryatt all squandering good scoring opportunities.

ENL 1 – West Auckland Result

An Evenly Matched Affair

Shildon AFC are still 3rd in the league after an enthralling evenly matched  2 – 2 home draw against top of the league side West Auckland Town on Saturday 28th February 2015.

In front of a big crowd, Shildon nearly scored in the 1st minute when Jamie Harwood found Lee Scroggins but his shot was well blocked with his body by keeper Dan Lowson.

West scored a minute later with their first attack of the game when Lewis Galpin found ex Shildon forward Craig Ruddy, who looked suspiciously off side, for him to put the ball past keeper Kyle Hayes.

Shildon came slowly into the game  and were level on 24 minutes when Lee Scroggins found Paul Connor whose cool right footer beat keeper Lowson. Connor had the ball in the net again, but the goal was ruled off side by the assistant referee.

On 33 minutes West’s Craig Ruddy’s shot was deflected wide for a corner, then Daryll Hall headed just over the bar. Shortly after, Shildon’s keeper Kyle Hayes pulled off two great saves, the first from Alex Francis and then from Mattie Moffat, before the ball was eventually cleared off the line.

Half Time:  Shildon AFC  1  West Auckland Town  1

Early in the 2nd half it was end to end stuff but not many clear cut chances, with Mattie Moffat firing over the bar just before the hour.

Shildon went behind for the 2nd time on 71 minutes when Micky Tait fired into the area for top notch poacher Mattie Moffat to poke the ball home.

The lead was short lived as the Railwaymen were level minutes later when Paul Connor put in a brilliant cross from the right and Mark Doninger blasted a cracking goal into the roof of the next from close range.

Shildon were reduced to 10 men on 80 minutes when Sam Hodgson received his 2nd yellow card, and with the one man advantage West’s player/manager Steven Skinner send central defender Daryll Hall into the attack in the quest for the winner. But with just 3 minutes remaining this move nearly backfired on him as Shildon’s Mark Doninger crossed to the unmarked Adam Rundle, but he headed wide with the goal at his mercy.

Final Score:  Shildon AFC  2  West Auckland Town  2

Goalscorers:  Connor 24, Doninger 77.

Subs:  Richardson for Chapman 46, Rundle for Emms 75, Ellison for Wood 81.

Bookings:  (R) Hodgson 80  (Y)  Emms 75, Moore 90.

A hard fought game between two evenly matched sides. In the end a draw was a fair result. After today’s results West have been knocked off the top of the league with Guisborough taking over the top spot. They have 67 points and played 33 games. West, in 2nd place are on 66 points and played 32 games, whilst Shildon are 3rd on 63 points but have only played 29 games. The league title is still wide open.

Man-of-The-Match

West Auckland v Shildon AFC

The Twelfth Man turned out in force at West Auckland this afternoon for the game of the day in the FA Vase.

Unfortunately for the Railwaymen it was a bad day at the office, and although the sides were evenly matched throughout, a solitary goal for the home side separated the teams and saw Shildon exit this season’s tournament after just one match.

Shildon and West couldn’t have wished for a worse draw and the game proved to be a tight and tense affair with very few chances for either side.

There was no effort of note in the entire first 45 minutes and it was Shildon who should have taken the lead at the beginning of the second half when Ben Wood found space in the box and set up a glorious opportunity for himself.

But the normally composed finisher opted for power and, instead of calmly placing the ball into the inviting net, swiped wildly and sent it high and wide of the target.

It was a game in which the referee leaned heavily in favour the home side in his decision making and in the 65th minute, this tendency proved fatal for the visitors.

What appeared to be a free kick for Shildon when Mark Hudson was bundled to the ground was waved away by the official. However, he could not be blamed for the players’ failure to play on and, as they stopped to protest the foul, Garthwaite strode forward uncontested and drove a powerful shot high into the roof of the net from 20 yards.

Shildon almost equalised immediately, but a goalmouth scramble ricocheted harmlessly into Nixon’s arms.

Try as they might, Shildon could not find an equaliser and late in the game it took a goal line clearance to keep the score down to one-nil.

Unfortunately time ran out on last year’s FA Vase semi-finalists, but the Railwaymen can be consoled in the knowledge that they remain in top spot in the league and can now focus their attentions on an historic tilt at this season’s title.

The disappointment of the result will stay with the squad, the supporters and the town in the coming days, but this team of proven winners will be ready to go again in the league next Friday evening at Crook Town.
