ENL1 – Marske United Final Score
Shildon AFC Keep Their League Title Challenge On Track
Shildon AFC keep their league title challenge on track after a close encounter with high flying 3rd placed Marske United on Saturday 17th February 2015. The Railwaymen were 2 – 1 winners after a 90 minute penalty gave the home side all 3 points.
Shildon were ahead after 10 minutes when a right wing corner from Ben Wood found Billy Greulich-Smith who headed into the top corner of the net from 6 yards out.
Marske levelled just 5 minutes later when a corner by Josh Macdonald was pushed out by keeper Kyle Hayes. Shildon’s Paul Connor thought he had cleared the ball off the line, but the assistant referee awarded a goal, given to No 5 Thomas Bott.
It was an open game with chances from both sides. Marske’s Josh Macdonald, looking well off side, was clean through but Kyle Hayes made a great block with his feet.
For Shildon Micky Rae had a one on one with the keeper Robert Dean who also blocked well with his feet.

On the hour a Ben Wood scissor kick went just wide, before Wood was through on goal but keeper Dean saved the day..
For Marske, a Darren Hollingsworth power drive was stopped by keeper Hayes.
After a Billy Greulich-Smith header and Mark Doninger firing into the side netting from 6 yards out, it looked like the game would end up all square, but on the 90th minute Adam Wheatley handled in the box for a penalty which Lee Scroggins blasted into the roof of the net.
Shortly after the goal there was a massive fracas with several players from both side involved, but remarkably, no one was booked. The game finished on 97 minutes.

After the match manager Gary Forrest said “It was a good solid team performance today against a very good side. We kept our shape, and they never really hurt us, and to be fair, it was a soft goal. We edged it on the day and deserved to win”.

Shildon AFC 125th Anniversary Dinner
SHILDON AFC TO HOST 125th ANNIVERSARY DINNER
Shildon Football Club, founded in 1890, is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.
In recognition of this milestone, the club – which is this season competing for its first league title in 75 years – is hosting a commemorative Sportsman’s Dinner, sponsored by Shildon AFC Supporters Club, at County Durham’s prestigious Redworth Hall.
The evening’s special guest speaker, sponsored by Identity Consult, will be Jeff Stelling of Sky Sports fame.
Since 1994, football fans across the nation have enjoyed listening to Hartlepool fan Stelling’s frenetic goal announcements as the presenter of Gillette Soccer Saturday for Sky Sports. He also presents Sky’s coverage of the Champions League and from 2009 until 2011 he presented Channel 4’s cult afternoon quiz show, Countdown.
The popular presenter has been named as Sports Broadcaster of the Year for five successive years by the Sports Journalists’ Association, based on a poll of its members, making him the only broadcaster to win the award since its inauguration.
The evening will be compered by local non-league groundhopper, well-known Sunderland and Shildon fan and fount of non-league knowledge, Peter Sixsmith.
The event will include a three-course silver service dinner, an auction of high quality sports memorabilia and a blind envelope with the chance to win a year’s membership to the Redworth Hall fitness suite (worth £500) and a year’s membership to the ladies health spa (worth £200).
Tickets for the event, which takes place on Saturday 27th June from 7pm, are priced at £40 and are available now. Tables of ten are available at £400 per table but tickets are selling fast with half the available tables already booked. Bookings will be on a first come, first served basis. Anyone wishing to attend is advised to reserve their seat or table as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Shildon AFC league title challenge takes a knock.
Shildon AFC league title challenge took a knock on Wednesday 11th February 2015 when they were beaten 2 – 0 at Newcastle Benfield.
With both teams playing open football there were chances at both ends with Shildon’s keeper Kyle Hayes making good saves from Michael Riley and Paul Brayson, with Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger stopping a Bobby Moore drive.
On 36 minutes Bobby Moore hit the bar from a corner before a soft penalty was awarded against Darren Richardson. Grayson’s penalty kick was brilliantly turned onto the post by Shildon keeper Kyle Hayes. A minute later however, he had no chance when captain Grayson was clean through and he lifted the ball over him for 1 – 0 to the home side.

Shildon were more effective in the 2nd half with Mark Hudson firing just over the bar , and keeper making two good stops from Ben Wood.
Benfield were awarded a hotly disputed second penalty for a foul by Mark Hudson on 71 minutes, but this time Brayson managed to beat Hayes from the spot.
Both side continued to create chances but the score remained the same, with Benfield slightly edging the game on the night and deserved to win.
