Shildon fundraiser a winner with locals

SHILDON AFC’s kit lady raises over £2,000, in memory of her late partner, for great causes, including the club where he was a director.

The event which took place on Saturday 9 February at Elm Road Club, Shildon proved to be a massive hit with more than 120 of the local community enjoying 1960’s and 70’s music, from the ‘Travillin Band’.

Susan Charlton organises the annual charity night which this year raised over £2,000 for Diabetes UK, Prosthetic Limb Centre, James Cook Hospital and the football club.

Miss Charlton’s late partner and Shildon AFC director John Hay, 69, collapsed and died while he watched his beloved Shildon AFC play Seaham Red Star in a Durham County Challenge Cup game in January 2013.

Mrs Charlton is planning to hand over the money to the groups at Shildon AFC’s presentation night on 4 May.

She said: “I just loved doing the fundraising and everyone has supported us. It makes me so proud to be part of this community.  We had 118 raffles, 31 auction and 210 tombola prizes donated which was just brilliant”

Diane Dent, treasurer of Shildon AFC, said: “On behalf of the football club I’d like to thank Sue, she’s an absolute star. John was a big part of the club. I think that what Sue is doing is absolutely fantastic and it’s keeping him alive in the football club.”

Community football club physio jumps at the chance to fundraise

SHILDON AFC’s physiotherapist Nikki Brown has pledged to take part in a tandem skydive all in the name of charity.

The jump will be in aid of Breast Cancer Now who fund research that is entirely focused on breast cancer and put their supporters at the heart of everything they do.

Miss Brown said :“they say cancer touches lives; well it certainly touched mine.  I have lost my great nan and aunty to cancer and one of my best friends is currently fighting the disease.  When I had the opportunity to fundraise for Breast Cancer Now, I literally jumped at the chance”

Originally from Washington, now Hetton le Hole, Miss Brown joined Shildon AFC as their physiotherapist in December 2017.  Miss Brown said “ I love being part of the club and they give so much back to others, I hope I can too”

The community club management, players, members and volunteers work hard to fundraise for many charities both locally and nationally contributing over £6,000 in last year, with more on the horizon.

A target of £450 is hoped to be raised from the skydive. All donations will be greatly received and can be made at

Shildon AFC receive donation from Making A Difference Locally

Many thanks to Joan Raw from Nisa Local who nominated Shildon AFC to receive a donation from Making a difference locally.

Making a Difference Locally is a charity launched to help independently run local stores to add value to their communities.

The charity helps the stores achieve this by allowing them to nominate charities or good causes that are local to them to receive a specific donation from us. Donations may be to local sports teams, hospices or one of the many charities operating in the UK.

We thank everyone involved in making the decision to donate £350 to the Football Club and it is very much appreciated.

Trailblazer Shildon AFC support young players

SHILDON AFC have committed to offering young players with emerging talent the opportunity to play in the Ebac Northern League in their first team.

David Dent, chairman of Shildon AFC set out plans to grow the club into the wider community in October 2018 with the appointment of a new sporting director Martin Gray.

Dent said “with the new structure of the club in place Martin is now in a position to identify any young players who have reached a point in their football career where they would benefit from, and be put forward to play with the first team”

There are ten eager young players currently associated with the first team. Aaron Duell, Dominic Curl, Aidan Heywood, Brad Hird and Dane Eltringham who are all under 21 years old and Ben Reay, Stevie Johnson, Mason Hurworth, Oscar Eckley-Aldsworth and Liam Waters who are 16 years old.  The four youngest players have all come through a training programme with the Martin Gray Football Academy.

Daniel Moore, Shildon AFC manager, took the decision to play Mason Hurworth and Stevie Johnson at the Durham Challenge Cup quarter final which they won with an impressive 6-1 victory against Consett AFC.

Moore said : “Both myself and assistant manager Mark Hudson  have worked hard with these young lads in all aspects of the game.  The aim is to give them a platform to work hard, thrive and achieve their goals. I want to add to the professionalism of the current senior members of the squad such as Matty Robson and Dale Mulligan.  They have been brilliant when working with the young players and being able to be around such characters will only develop them even more”
