West Auckland V Shildon

A Poor Performance

Shildon AFC drop to 8th in the league after a below par performance away at West Auckland on Saturday 20th September 2014 going down 3 – 2.

Shildon started badly falling behind on just 8 minutes when Darren Richardson brought down West’s Steve Richardson for a penalty which Robbie Briggs converted.

It was 1 – 1 on 20 minutes when a Ben Wood free kick was headed in by Darren Craddock.

Just after the half hour West were ahead again when Shildon keeper Lewis Graham came out for a cross but failed to contact, finding himself in no man’s land for Steve Richardson to overhead kick the ball into an empty net.

Shortly afterwards West should have had another penalty when man-of-the-match Steve Richardson was brought down by Darren Craddock.

West looked dangerous and Speedy Richardson could easily added 2 more goals before the break, with Shildon’s defence wide open.

Half Time:  West Auckland  2  Shildon AFC  1

West increased their lead on the hour when Speedy Richardson used his pace down the right and squared to Robbie Briggs to side-foot into the net for 3 – 1.

Shildon pulled a goal back on 70 minutes when a Ben Wood shot was parried by West keeper Daniel Lowson to Billy Greulich-Smith who was on hand to turn the ball home for 3 – 2.

Final Score:  West Auckland  3  Shildon AFC  2

Goalscorers:  Craddock 20, Greulich-Smith 70.

Subs:  Rundle for Emms 57, Hodgson for Hudson 60, Ruddy for Rae 62.

After the match manager Gary Forrest said “Our defending today was poor. We lacked energy and seemed to be flat. We were nothing like the team that played Whitby last week. The whole team must improve if we wish to progress on Saturday in the F.A. Cup”

West were the better team and deserved to win the game..

Whitby V Shildon

An Excellent Win

Shildon AFC progressed to the 2nd Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup after an excellent 2 – 1 away win against Whitby Town on Wednesday 17th September. The teams had played a 1 – 1 draw at Dean Street on Saturday 13th September.

Shildon were well on top in the 1st half and missed a penalty on 20 minutes when Micky Rae was brought down in the box. With star penalty taken Mark Hudson not playing, Micky Rae took the kick himself, but his shot was weak and the keeper saved comfortably.

The Railwaymen deservedly took the lead when Ben Wood crossed for Billy Greulich-Smith to score from close range.

With only a minute remaining of the 1st half Whitby were level when a defensive error let David McTiernan free and he beat keeper Lewis Grahm.

Half Time:  Whitby Town  1  Shildon AFC  1

Early in the 2nd half Whiltby’s Lee Mason hit the bar and Shildon had a couple of chances, but just after the hour Ben Wood broke down the right and crossed for Micky Rae to score the winner with an overhead kick.

Shildon could have added further goals before the end but man-of-the-match keeper Shane Bland pulled off some good saves.

Final Score:  Whitby Town  1  Shildon AFC  2

Goalscorers:  Greulich-Smith 29, Rae 63.

Subs:  Rae for Connor 5, Rundle for Emms 75, Richmond for Greulich-Smith 87.

Man-of-the-Match:  Daniel Moore

After the match manager Gary Forrest said “A good all-round team performance. We were very rarely threatened and we controlled the play. Their man-of-the-match for both games was their keeper Shane Bland, that should tell you something”.

Shildon V Whitby

Shildon AFC entertained Whitby Town at Dean Street in the F.A. Cup on Saturday 13th September and were annoyed with themselves for failing to see off the visitors, drawing 1-1.

Early pressure came from Whitby with No 9 Craig Farrell heading wide. Shildon responded and Paul Connor was put through but he blasted over, the best chance of the game so far.

On 29 minutes the Railwaymen took the lead when a Chris Emms corner was headed out to Ben Wood, whose long range brilliant volley crashed into the roof of the net.

Whitby pressed forward and No 11 Liam Shepperd rounded Daniel Moore and his low drive found the net for the seasider’s equaliser.

The outstanding action of the 1st half was when Whitby’s manager deliberately hoofed the ball high over Shildon’s stand and out of the ground! Half Time: Shildon AFC 1 Whitby Town 1.

On 49 minutes Paul Connor beat the off-side trap, rounded the keeper and stroked the ball towards the empty net, only to be thwarted by a clearance off the line by a defender.

More pressure from Shildon followed with Ben Wood firing over the bar and the keeper saving from Lee Scroggins. A great five man Shildon move saw Chris Emms hit the post with the keeper beaten. Shildon were dominant, not holding back, pressing for the winner, but despite Whitby not having one shot on target in the whole of the 2nd half, the game still ended 1 – 1.

After the match manager Gary Forrest said, “The game was even in the 1st half, but we controlled the 2nd half and should have won the game”.

Shildon V Newcastle Benfield

Shildon AFC got back to winning ways on Saturday 6th September at Dean Street, with a 2 – 1 win against Newcastle Benfield, with both goals being scored quite late in the game.

After Shildon’s keeper tipped over a long range effort from Mark Convery, Shildon created several chances to open the score. Mark Hudson fired straight at the keeper then headed wide, before Chris Emms’ shot was tipped over. Just before the break Emms, Paul Connor and Ben Wood all had shots one after another blocked by Benfield’s defenders.

Half Time: Shildon AFC 0 Newcastle Benfield 0.

Early in the second half Shildon had all the possession, but against the run of play, Benfield took the lead on 65 minutes when Michael Riley broke away and found Paul Brayson, who shot low past Lewis Graham.

Shildon had numerous corners and pressed hard for the equaliser, and on 83 minutes Paul Connor fired over the keeper but the ball was headed off the line by Chris Carr. Two minutes later, with time running out, the Railwaymen got their reward when Jamie Harwood fired through a crowd of players for 1 – 1.

With only a minute remaining, Micky Rae cracked in a great goal from 25 yards out for victory.

Final Score: Shildon AFC 2 Newcastle Benfield 1.

Padiham V Shildon

Shildon AFC are through to the next round of the F.A. Cup after a 1 – 0 away victory at Padiham, near Burnley, who play in the Evostik Northern Premier League, which includes Darlington 1883 and Spennymoor.

The first chance fell to The Stork’s No 9 Paul Fildes, whose shot was punched away by Shildon’s keeper Lewis Graham. Then Sam Garvie fired just wide, before on the half hour Daniel Moore was brought down in the box for a spot kick. Up stepped reliable penalty taker captain Mark Hudson to give Shildon a deserved lead.

Half Time: Padiham 0 Shildon AFC 1.

Early on in the 2nd half Shildon had early possession before a Padiham shot was parried away by keeper Graham to No 11 Kurt Willoughby, but somehow Carl Jones made a brilliant block with his feet. On the hour a Carl Jones effort was goal-bound but was headed off the line by Padiham’s stat man Louis Haynes. Ten minutes later Shildon’s man-of-the-match Daniel Moore fired a long range drive but it hit the post and bounced back into play. Near the end Ben Wood and Billy Greulich-Smith were both through but failed to add to the score.

Final Score: Padiham 0 Shildon AFC 1.

Goalscorer: Hudson 30.

Man-of-the-Match: Daniel Moore.

After the match manager Gary Forrest said, “The 1st half was a good solid performance but in the 2nd half we were not as good. Perhaps the long 3 hour journey down to Lancashire wasn’t the best preparation for the game. Nevertheless, we still deserved to win”.
