Hallam 0-2 Shildon: Match Report

Shildon progressed to the third round of the FA Vase after a 2-0 victory over Sheffield-based Hallam at Sandygate.

Dean Thexton gave the Railwaymen the lead in the 50th minute with a neat finish beyond Sam Andrew.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 68th minute when Jack Vaulks poked the ball home after a scramble in the box.

Thexton came close to giving Shildon the lead in the 13th minute, as he skipped past three Hallam players before seeing his low effort saved by Andrew.

Kurt Matthews saw his low strike saved by Andrew in the 27th minute, after driving into the area past the Hallam defender.

The home side nearly took the lead just before half-time, when Danny Deakin sent his effort from the edge of the box just wide of the post.

Shildon went ahead early on in the second half, when Michael Sweet’s exquisite through ball sent Thexton through on goal, before he placed his effort into the top corner past Andrew.

The away side’s advantage was doubled 22 minutes from time, as Vaulks was to first to the ball after a scramble in the box, before sending his effort into the bottom corner via a slight deflection off a Hallam defender.

Hallam pushed forward in search of a goal and came close, with Kieren Watson forcing a world class save out of Shaun Newbrook, keeping Shildon’s advantage intact.

Shildon travel to Stockton Town in the third round of the FA Vase next Saturday, in hope they can progress to the next round.

Sunderland RCA 2 Shildon 3, Match Report by Adam Gill #FAVase

Sunderland RCA 2-3 Shildon: Match Report

Shildon produced a second-half comeback away to Sunderland RCA as they progressed to the next round of the Buildbase FA Vase.

Stephen Callen gave RCA the lead in the 27th minute, before Anthony Callaghan doubled the home sides lead in the 52nd minute.

Chay Liddle, David Palmer and Dean Thexton all scored in the remaining 30 minutes, as the Railwaymen pulled off a comeback.

Neither side had any real chances in the game until the 27th minute, when Callen was left unmarked from a corner before tapping home beyond Shaun Newbrook from six yards out.

Callaghan made it two just after half-time, as he robbed Jack Vaulks of possession on the edge of the Shildon box, before slotting home beyond Newbrook.

Shildon pulled a goal back in the 59th minute, when Joe Posthill drove to the byline before pulling the ball back to Liddle, who smashed the ball home from 15 yards out.

The away side thought they had equalised in the 66th minute, when Posthill’s looping cross was met by the head of Thexton at the back post, however Paul Griffith got down low to turn his effort wide of the post.

The Railwaymen equalised in the 69th minute, when Thexton laid the ball off to Palmer on the edge, before his weak effort was spilled by Griffith into the net.

Shildon were awarded a penalty in the 78th minute when Liddle was brought down in the box under after a rash challenge from Ryan Leonard.

Thexton stepped up to take and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner, sending RCA keeper Griffith the wrong way to complete the comeback.

The away side held on for the win, which sees them go through to the next round of the competition.

Newton Aycliffe 1 Shildon 1, Match Report by Adam Gill

Newton Aycliffe 1-1 Shildon: Match Report

10 man Shildon were held to a draw by Newton Aycliffe after Jordan Lavery was sent off at Moore Lane in the Ebac Northern League Division One.

David Palmer gave the away side the lead in the 50th minute before Lavery was sent off five minutes later for a lunging challenge.

Newton Aycliffe pulled level 20 minutes from time when Ben Reay curled home after beating Shildon keeper Shaun Newbrook to the ball.

Shildon were looking to return to winning ways after a disappointing defeat at Hebburn whilst Newton Aycliffe looked to pick up their first win.

The visitors started the brightest of the two, when Michael Sweet saw his effort tipped over by Adam Pickford just two minutes in.

No clear chances came for either side until the 43rd minute, when Andrei Ardelean saw his close range strike brilliantly tipped over the bar by Newbrook.

The Railwaymen took the lead when Palmer rose highest from Lavery’s corner to turn the ball into the Aycliffe net beyond Pickford.

Shildon were reduced to 10 just five minutes later, when Lavery was adjudged to have caught Reay on the leg with his studs.

The extra man showed for Aycliffe and they were level 15 minutes later, when Reay beat Newbrook to ball, before turning him and curling a great strike into the top right corner.

Despite being a man down Shildon kept pushing and almost regained their lead, when Billy Greulich-Smith found himself through on goal, however he could only send his lobbed effort wide.

Aycliffe failed to break Shildon down, meaning both sides had to settle for a point.

Shildon entertain Northallerton Town at Dean Street on Tuesday whilst Newton Aycliffe host Newcastle Benfield in their next match.

Shildon nearly scored again soon after as Dean Thexton played through Heywood, however the defender could only fire his effort over the bar.

The hosts doubled their lead 21 minutes in when Greulich-Smith knocked down Joe Posthill’s cross, before Heywood slotted home into the bottom corner.
