Shildon 2 Chester-le-Street 1, match report by Adam Gill

Shildon 2-1 Chester-le-Street: Match Report

Shildon progressed to the next round of the FA Vase as they came away from Dean Street with a hard fought win against Chester-le-Street.

Danny Craggs gave the home side the lead in the 13th minute before Luke Collins levelled the game just after half time in the 50th minute.

Billy Greulich-Smith sealed the win from the spot in the 75th minute as Shildon after Ben Trotter was brought down in the box.

The Railwaymen took the lead when David Palmer laid the ball off to Craggs on the edge of the box, before his sweet strike nestled into the bottom corner beyond Maximilliano Coombes.

The home side almost doubled their lead in the 25th minute, when Palmer connected with Greulich-Smith’s whipped cross, however his goal bound header was well saved by Coombes.

Greulich-Smith went close a minute later, as he held off challenges from the Chester-le-Street defenders, before sending his long rang strike just wide of the post.

The visitors found themselves level five minutes into the second half, when Collins’ cross-come-shot looped over Shaun Newbrook, leaving the Shildon keeper no chance.

The hosts had a chance to take the lead just three minutes later, when Aidan Heywood found Dean Thexton in space 10 yards out, however the striker could only send his effort over the bar.

Shildon were awarded a penalty 15 minutes from time, when Trotter was brought down in the box under the challenge of Matthew Keogh.

Greulich-Smith stepped up and sent Coombes the wrong way, confidently dispatching the ball into the bottom left hand corner.

Shildon held on for the win, which sees them travel to Division One rivals Sunderland RCA in the next round of the FA Vase.

Chairman’s Update – Covid-19

As you are all aware there have been new restrictions issued for parts of the North East of England with regard to Covid-19. Following previous guidance from the Durham County Football Association and our continuing wish to play football we will continue to fulfill fixtures at Dean Street – in line with the Governments guidelines. Therefore the scheduled tie in the FA Vase against Chester le Street will go ahead tomorrow (19/9/20) with the maximum number of spectators allowed being 300.

We have continued to work hard and improve the Covid-19 plans for the Club, bar, and Clubhouse taking into account changes in guidance as they happen. Portaloos continue to be available within the ground as the bar is closed on match days and entrance to the ground is only allowed to those who have previously applied for tickets. We will continue to use these applications as the basis to collect information to support track and trace.

Current advice states that “you should not attend amateur or professional sporting events as a spectator in the areas affected. If you do attend, you must remain socially distanced and groups of no more than 6”.

When you come to the ground can you ensure the following happens;

  • you MUST NOT socialise with other people outside of your own households or support bubble (a maximum of 6).

  • you use our hand sanitiser.

  • you adhere to social distancing guidelines

  • you DON’T use the Bar toilets.

Your help and understanding in complying with these restrictions will help us to ensure we can continue to host football games.

As and when guidance/restrictions change we well endeavor to keep you informed.

Many thanks for your support.

Shildon 3-0 Northallerton Town: Match Report

Shildon got back to winning ways after they defeated nine man Northallerton Town at Dean Street in the Northern League Division One.

Billy Greulich-Smith’s penalty in the 55th minute gave Shildon the lead before Matthew Crust’s own goal doubled Shildon’s lead.

John Howard was sent off for the visitors before Dean Thexton increased the Railwaymen’s advantage from the spot.

Andrew Shepherd was given a straight red card in added time as that capped a dismal evening for the visiting side.

The away side had the first chance of the game five minutes in, when Nathaniel Skidmore saw his effort from 25 yards out cannon back off the bar.

Both sides pushed for the opening goal before half time, with Daniel Moore heading just wide before Nathan Stephenson saw his effort saved by Shaun Newbrook.

Shildon were awarded a penalty when David Palmer was thought to be fouled in the box, however the Northallerton didn’t seem to think though.

Greulich-Smith stepped up and slotted home into the bottom right corner, sending Northallerton keeper Thomas Dawson the wrong way.

The home side were two ahead in the 70th minute, when a fizzing low cross wasn’t dealt with by Crust who turned home into his own net.

The away side were reduced to 10 just minutes later, when Howard was shown a second yellow after a poor challenge on Chay Liddle.

Shildon were awarded their second penalty of the game after a Northallerton defender was thought to have handled the ball in the box.

Thexton stepped up and fired home, sending Dawson the wrong way to score his first goal of the season.

Shildon face Chester-le-Street in the FA Vase at Dean Street on Saturday, whilst Northallerton host Billingham Town.

Newton Aycliffe 1 Shildon 1, Match Report by Adam Gill

Newton Aycliffe 1-1 Shildon: Match Report

10 man Shildon were held to a draw by Newton Aycliffe after Jordan Lavery was sent off at Moore Lane in the Ebac Northern League Division One.

David Palmer gave the away side the lead in the 50th minute before Lavery was sent off five minutes later for a lunging challenge.

Newton Aycliffe pulled level 20 minutes from time when Ben Reay curled home after beating Shildon keeper Shaun Newbrook to the ball.

Shildon were looking to return to winning ways after a disappointing defeat at Hebburn whilst Newton Aycliffe looked to pick up their first win.

The visitors started the brightest of the two, when Michael Sweet saw his effort tipped over by Adam Pickford just two minutes in.

No clear chances came for either side until the 43rd minute, when Andrei Ardelean saw his close range strike brilliantly tipped over the bar by Newbrook.

The Railwaymen took the lead when Palmer rose highest from Lavery’s corner to turn the ball into the Aycliffe net beyond Pickford.

Shildon were reduced to 10 just five minutes later, when Lavery was adjudged to have caught Reay on the leg with his studs.

The extra man showed for Aycliffe and they were level 15 minutes later, when Reay beat Newbrook to ball, before turning him and curling a great strike into the top right corner.

Despite being a man down Shildon kept pushing and almost regained their lead, when Billy Greulich-Smith found himself through on goal, however he could only send his lobbed effort wide.

Aycliffe failed to break Shildon down, meaning both sides had to settle for a point.

Shildon entertain Northallerton Town at Dean Street on Tuesday whilst Newton Aycliffe host Newcastle Benfield in their next match.
