Shildon v Warrington Rylands Match Report by Adam Gill

Shildon 0-0 Warrington Rylands (4-5 pen)

Shildon were defeated on penalties in the Fourth Round of the FA Vase against Warrington Rylands at Dean Street.

The hosts were awarded a penalty in the ninth minute when Joe Posthill was brought down in the Warrington box.

Dean Thexton stepped up to take the penalty, however he saw his effort saved by Warrington keeper Graeme McCall.

The away went close in the 12th minute when Stephen Milne was played through by Warren Gerrard only to put his strike wide of the post.

Thexton went close for Shildon again in the 27th minute, however he could only fire over the bar from six yards out.

The Railwaymen came close to the lead in the 35th minute when Aidan Heywood cut inside on his left foot before seeing his effort cannon back off the post.

With few chances in the second half from both sides and the score level, the match was to be decided by penalties.

Danny Craggs and Billy Greulich-Smith scored the first two penalties for Shildon, whilst Paul Shanley and Milne scored Warrington’s first two.

Shaun Newbrook saved Gerrard’s penalty, before Thexton and Smith scored Shildon’s third penalty and Warrington’s fourth penalty respectively.

Daniel Moore missed Shildon’s fourth before Michael Sweet scored for Shildon and Andrew Scarisbrick scored for Warrington to take the tie to sudden death.

Connor Ready stepped up and scored for Warrington before McCall saved Heywood’s penalty to send Warrington through.

Stockton Town 1-3 Shildon: Match Report

Shildon saw off a tough Stockton Town side in the Buildbase FA Vase as they progressed to the fourth round at the Map Group UK Stadium.

Dean Thexton gave the Railwaymen the lead in the 13th minute before Kurt Matthews doubled his sides lead on the stroke of half time.

Nathan Mulligan pulled a goal back for Stockton in the 73rd minute, before Thexton sealed the win for Shildon five minutes from time.

Shildon reached the third round after an away win against Hallam, whilst Stockton defeated Charnock Richard at home.

The home side had the first chance of the game, when Kevin Hayes cut inside past Dom Curl however his effort was saved by Shaun Newbrook.

Thexton gave his side the lead just two minutes later, when his brilliant strike dipped over keeper Ross Coombe into the net.

Shildon almost went two up in the 33rd minute, when Thexton ran onto Daniel Moore’s long ball, before seeing his half-volley saved by Coombe.

The away side doubled their lead on the stroke of half time, as captain Chay Liddle played through Matthews who slotted home beyond Coombe.

Stockton pushed forward in the second half – Hayes and Shane Henry going close – however the Shildon back line stood strong and resilient.

The hosts did find a way back into the game through Mulligan, as he brought down a cross before firing low past Newbrook to half the deficit.

Shildon’s two goal advantage was restored in the 85th minute, when Michael Sweet laid the ball off to Thexton, who excellently placed the ball into the top corner to seal the win.

Stockton bow out of the competition at the third round, whilst Shildon continue their quest to Wembley.

Hallam 0-2 Shildon: Match Report

Shildon progressed to the third round of the FA Vase after a 2-0 victory over Sheffield-based Hallam at Sandygate.

Dean Thexton gave the Railwaymen the lead in the 50th minute with a neat finish beyond Sam Andrew.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 68th minute when Jack Vaulks poked the ball home after a scramble in the box.

Thexton came close to giving Shildon the lead in the 13th minute, as he skipped past three Hallam players before seeing his low effort saved by Andrew.

Kurt Matthews saw his low strike saved by Andrew in the 27th minute, after driving into the area past the Hallam defender.

The home side nearly took the lead just before half-time, when Danny Deakin sent his effort from the edge of the box just wide of the post.

Shildon went ahead early on in the second half, when Michael Sweet’s exquisite through ball sent Thexton through on goal, before he placed his effort into the top corner past Andrew.

The away side’s advantage was doubled 22 minutes from time, as Vaulks was to first to the ball after a scramble in the box, before sending his effort into the bottom corner via a slight deflection off a Hallam defender.

Hallam pushed forward in search of a goal and came close, with Kieren Watson forcing a world class save out of Shaun Newbrook, keeping Shildon’s advantage intact.

Shildon travel to Stockton Town in the third round of the FA Vase next Saturday, in hope they can progress to the next round.

Bootle 0 Shildon 2, Match report by Adam Gill

Shildon progressed to the FA Vase Second Round as they beat Bootle 2-0 away from home at the Berry Street Garage Stadium.

Joe Posthill gave the away side the lead in the 54th minute after cutting inside from the right wing before firing home.

Chay Liddle sealed the win for the Railwaymen in the 72nd minute when his shot nestled into the bottom corner.

With the wind behind them, Bootle had the most chances in the first half, however Shildon had some chances of their own.

The home side had the first chance of the game, when Steven Hoy saw his long range effort equally matched by Shaun Newbrook.

Dean Thexton nearly gave Shildon the lead, when he drove inside before seeing his whipped effort saved by Ryan Jones.

Bootle almost took the lead just before half-time, when Kieran Halligan’s long range strike was well turned away by Newbrook.

Shildon took the lead in the 54th minute, when Posthill cut inside with a neat stepover before curling his effort into the bottom corner past Jones.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 72nd minute, when Liddle picked up the ball on the edge of the box, before firing a pinpoint effort into the bottom corner.

Michael Sweet nearly added a third for the away side, however his low effort was brilliantly saved by Jones.

Bootle pushed forward trying to get back into the game, however anything Bootle threw forward, Shildon threw back.

The whole Shildon team produced a fantastic performance – Daniel Moore in particular – as they capped off a great display with a win and a clean sheet that sees them go into the next round of the FA Vase.

Ryhope CW 1 Shildon 1, match report by Adam Gill

Shildon were held to a 1-1 draw away to 10 man Ryhope CW at Ryhope Recreational Park in the Ebac Northern League Division One.

Dean Thexton gave the Railwaymen the lead in the 14th minute when he poked the ball home after a scramble in the box.

Danni Lay was sent off for the hosts before David Vincent levelled the game for the home side from the spot.

Shildon sat in fifth place before the game seven points off top, whilst Ryhope sat in 15th.

Thexton gave Shildon the lead with the first real chance of the game, when Kurt Matthews saw his low shot saved by James Winter, before Thexton followed up and poked home.

Thexton almost doubled his sides lead just two minutes later, when he took the ball past two defenders before seeing his strike blocked on the line by Jack Walker.

With the visitors piling on the pressure, they almost made it two when Joe Posthill’s cross was met by Michael Sweet, however his header went just over the bar.

The home side were reduced to 10 men in the 51st minute, when Lay brought down Matthews with a reckless challenge.

Despite having 10 men, Ryhope clawed themselves back into the game and were awarded a penalty in the 61st minute, when Ben Trotter brought down the forward in the box.

Vincent stepped up to take the penalty, sending Shaun Newbrook the wrong way to bring his side level.

Shildon kept pushing and could have went ahead in the 82nd minute, when the ball fell to Thexton in the box, however he could only send his volley over the bar.

Danny Craggs had a great chance in the 86th minute, however he sent his shot over the bar from six yards.

The match finished level, in what was a decent point for both sides on the night.

Thornaby 2 Shildon 5, Match Report by Adam Gill

Shildon came away from Thornaby with all three points as they defeated their promotion rivals at Teesdale Park in the Ebac Northern League Division One.

A brace from Dean Thexton and a goal from Aidan Heywood, alongside an own goal from Jamie Poole, gave Shildon a four goal lead 55 minutes in.

Dale Hopson and Jamie Davis pulled goals back for the home side, however Ben Trotter sealed the win for Shildon with his first touch in the 87th minute.

Shildon went into the game off the back of a five game unbeaten run, whilst Thornaby were unbeaten in their last three.

The Railwaymen took the lead just five minutes in, when Thexton dribbled past three Thornaby players in the area before slotting the ball into the bottom corner beyond Dimitrious Konstantopoulas.

The visitors scored their second in the 15th minute, when Aidan Heywood drove forward with the ball before arrowing a shot into the bottom right corner from the edge of the box.

Shildon created most of the chances in the first half, not allowing Thornaby to have a clear sight of goal.

Thexton scored his second in the 49th minute, when David Palmer’s pinpoint pass sent the striker through on goal, before he slotted beyond the keeper.

The away side found themselves four goals up in the 55th minute, when Joe Posthill’s cross was turned into the net by Thornaby defender Poole.

Thornaby were awarded a free kick 25 yards out in the 58th minute, which Hopson took and curled his effort into the top right corner, leaving Shaun Newbrook no chance.

The home side halfed the deficit just six minutes later, when Davis’ effort found its way past Newbrook to pull Thornaby back into the game.

James Frazer almost scored a third for the home side, however his downward header was well saved by Newbrook.

Trotter sealed the win for the Railwaymen in the 87th minute, when he met Michael Sweet’s low cross before slotting home in the bottom corner.

Shildon move up to fifth on goal difference, whilst Thornaby drop down to sixth in the table.
